Major issues....

I don't buy this at all. I eat a normal diet, 20-30 percent fat, 10-20 percent protein, and 60 percent carbohydrates.  I've lost over 95 pounds since March, 179 from my highest weight. Low carb is not a normal diet.

Works for me Bert.......1 carb = 1 dimple on my arse!

Anyways, she will find her way......being humans no two are alike and each persons bodies respond differently to various diets. Just a suggestion

Bert-- what the hell does "normal" mean? I mean, I don't think low-carb makes much sense, but "normal", I dunno. Seriously though-- "low-carb" seems to be important to some people-- not sure why, but whatever works, works. I think some people are carb-junkies and it makes them feel more in control. My diet was also up to  60%carbs, but I ate more protein and less fat than you did. For me, the issue wasn't "normalcy", but that protein/carbs gave me more energy and kept me full longer than the "low-carb" way. Also made it possible to eat foods closer to their source: lean meats, vegetables, fruit. The water content in vegetables and fruit has a lot to do with their staying power-- plus the added benefits of fiber. I'ma big fan of the poopage. What I *would* probably argue is the type of carbs you eat. I divide carbs into two piles: Lotsa white bread, macaroni and cheese--piles of gluten---etc...that'd be unwise. But I am with you, fresh fruits and veggies are always a good thing. Ayuh. Also a good idea to keep an eye on the glycemic index of the carbs you do eat-- carbs that metabolize quickly as sugar don't keep you sated as long, and cause your blood sugar to surge and flatline quickly-- which is a sensation I really grew to hate.

I eat alot of lean protein - because it keeps the hungries at bay.... about 100g a day.  Carbs about 200g per day - and *most* of those are 'good carbs' it isnt normal - but it works for me

Normal as in recommended by the American Dietetic Association guidelines for 2005. http://www.health.gov/dietaryguidelines/dga2005/document/html/chapter7.htm All the low carb advocates drive me bat**** (not you specifically violamom).  There isn't much information about the long term results of reducing your carb intake significantly.  In my opinion, the results seen by individuals targeting low carb plans has little to do with the fact that its low carb and lots to do with the fact that they are following an actual plan.

I'm gonna toss you a big fat "maybe" on that one, Kemosabe. Or even a "generally." My mom and brother ate HEINOUS amounts of food on a low carb diet-- piles and piles of meats and fat, and they had a pretty high caloric intake-- and still lost a lot of weight in a short time. Bigger issue there was the sustainability (how much bacon can you eat?) and the idea that buckets of fat is really no solution. The ADA still believes I should weigh 115 pounds, too. Not sure that we're always gonna be sympatico. I'm convinced it's not about low-carb, or low-cal, or low any-one-thing in particular. I think the key is probably, as with most things, balance and sustainability.

well I doubt anyone would classify 200 g of carbs as "Low"  LOL I did do the low carb thing once.... lost about 60 lbs.... then I fell into a vat of icecream.... so if I average about 75g of fat, 200 g carbs and 100 g protein I am at 20% fat, 53% carbs and 27% protein so that is pretty close to normal but on the high protein side.   right??

It's pretty solidly about where *I* like to be, anyway.  AKA "It worked for me."  AKA , "What the hell do I know about weight loss?"

Truth is, bert, me too!  It does bug, the whole low carb thing. For one thing, not many people realize that ALL foods (alcohol aside here for a moment) are made up of one or more of three things:  carbs, fat or protein. Simple as that. Fruits, veggies and grains are all carbs. So, in a sense, a very real sense, i do not eat a low carb diet.  What i do is restrict grain intake, i do sometimes refer to my way of eating as low carb to save time, but really, it is not.  I eat LOTS of fruits, veggies.   I know eating higher protein and moderate fat helps me not experience hunger...helps my satiety. Grains, even whole grains are hard for me to eat in the correct portions. A little makes me want a lot and so this is one food group that I need to monitor. ALL diets are a way to cut caloric intake regardless of what you cut, as long as calories get cut is where it's at!

Well, I've been sticking to my 1200-1400 calorie diet, been excercising and I'm still stuck at 233. It seems like I drop a bunch of weight and then plateau for a few weeks. Wierd. I was going to try the South Beach diet and see if that helps. I'm really desperate b/c I wanted to be 30 lbs lighter by the time hubby came back and he's been gone a month and I've dropped 1 lb... maybe... so damn frustrating!
