Shari how's your hunger?

I'm pretty sure you're eating less than you were pre-op even though you were already eating very little pre-op.  What's it like?  Is it painful?  Do you feel hungry?  I can't believe you haven't started losing yet. I suppose it sometimes could just take a little time...

A typical day: 3  slices of lunch meat and a .75 ounce piece of cheese Cup of Protein milk 1/4 cup chili Cup of Protein milk 1/3 of a yogurt and 1/4 cup pureed tuna _________________ Yeah, I guess you could say I am eating less. ;) Sometimes I have 4 crackers, too. I'm not hungry-- there's nowhere to put it. Eating can be painful if you eat dense meats and don't chew them enough, but that doesn't take long to figure out. I can't really answer the "What's it like " piece becuase I have atypical pain from two hematomas under my skin that make it hard to feel much else-- they only really hurt like hell after exercise, so I had to cut wayyyy back. Eating's basically just an inconvenience, now. Most people I know just don't bother anymore- which is probably why many of them lose so fast. I make sure I get 80g of protein every day. Not worried about it. I lost much more pre-op than anyone I know, so my losses are coming from the fat reserves, as they should. Just annoyed because it was a little easier and more predictable pre-op, but I am atypical that way.

Did you have an emotional attachment to food before you decided to lose the weight? Meaning did you live to eat or eat to live.  Do you think after the pain all goes away that you'll enjoy food again?  Do you want to?   (I'm taking up a new career as a WLS journalist.."

Nah, Chris-- I just liked the packaging. ;)  OF COURSE I was a junkie-- you don't get to 368 pounds because you're big boned, you know! I loved food...both for flavor and emotional reasons--right up until about two weeks ago...now it's just something I have to contend with, like taking a shower or feeding the cat. A minor inconvenience. It's medicine that runs the machinery. I don't expect to enjoy food for quite some time, but don't care. I ate everything I ever wanted, whenever I wanted-- for almost 40 years. Who else gets to say that, you know? I had my time, had a blast, tasted everything I could think of. It's not as bad as you think, once the monkey's off your back.

I fear that if I ever had WLS that I wouldn't get over my love for food.  It's what makes me the way I am too.  Come to think of it .. I don't know anyone... not even skinny people that don't love food.. The difference is they don't gain weight like I do from it.  Either that or they're a helluva alot more active than me..(which is very likely.)    Not really sure what I'm trying to say here.  More or less just curious about your life with WLS thus far.  Like I said before, you're the only person I knew pre-op..well at least the only one I talk to on a regular basis.

Chris -  It is my understanding that in the first year after WLS most patients lose their desire for food - full stop.  they have to force themselves to eat... but after that the desire to eat DOES come back, and most WLS patients must focus on making good food choices - low fat, high protein... no bad carbs. if they have dumping they have some extra help avoiding carbs and fat...  but if they dont they have to do it through sheer will power....  those who are unable to do it slowly regain if they consistenly make bad food choices that's my understanding anyway...  it is just a tool to get a lot of weight off fast in the first year.  The rest is up to the patient....
What I've eaten is here for the world to see

After WLS, it becomes an inconvenience at best, for awhile. You eat what you have to to fulfill your nutritional needs, but even the foods that you tolerate best can be iffy sometimes. I was a hardcore junkie. Even two weeks out I felt cravings and depression about that. Now, rich and tasty food just looks kind of "iffy", so it's lost much of its charm. You love food because eating it is both limitless and effortless. When it takes you 30 minutes to eat less than a 1/4 cup of food-- food that you have to carefully assess, put in a blender, add juice to, account for--well,  it's really just kind of annoying. There's no more "mouthfeel"-- no sinking teeth into thick pizza, or cramming it full of salty popcorn. There's no chugging juice on a hot day. There's baby spoons of bits of liquified stuff-- it tastes fine, it's just a lot of work, so you lose the passion quickly. I used to miss food. Now I miss missing food, if you know what I mean.

Sadly, I would rather be where you are.   That's kinda naive of me huh?

In a word? Yes. Where I am at the moment isn't especially charming.

You know what's crazy - I feel differently since I've started my wl journey. I was definitely one who was living to eat! I loved food, the way it tasted, the way it smelled... I couldn't get enough. Now that I've changed my lifestyle I feel like eating is a big inconvience that gets in my way. I wish we only had to "fuel" up like once a week or something - like you would gas up your car. I don't like eating anymore. Maybe I've gone on the other end of the spectrum where I'm scared to eat.....hmmm...that's not a good thing either.  Anywho, I hope your hematomas go away soon - like yesterday would be nice!
