I'm know expert, but I'm entitled to my opinion and I agree with Donna wholeheartedly.  I think RNY is taken too lightly by some people, especially if you don't have a higher BMI and or health problems.

I agree too.  A close friend of mine just had RNY with the band. (not sure what they call that.) She really didn't do any research at all.  In her defense her health is dramatically declining. She also did not want to do this for beauty. However, despite all of this she did kind of take this lightly at least from my impression. I figured someone who is going to do this is going to do loads of research and become almost obsessed about it. I know I would.  I think what has happened is that she has no other option and her doctor probably put it to her that way. "Do this, or die.."  She did/does have the mentality that she has given up dieting and wasn't going to do it anymore because she always fails and each time shes gets bigger and bigger.  What I'm afraid of is that while she will lose weight and ultimately become more healthy, it won't be a long term thing. She'll regain, even with the band.  I haven't seen many studies on this particular surgery but it does seem to combine the best of both worlds. Who knows.. I hope it works for her.  I love her to death! She is the most kindest, compassionate and giving woman I know. I just hope she really understand deep down what she has done. She does have a tendency to hide her true emotions, like many of us do.  She has also been suffering from bouts of severe depression..which I think is a side affect of her inability to move for long periods of time.

This is exactly what I'm talking about, Chris.  Yes, I understand her health is bad, but RnY is NOT the magic pill.  I think a lot of doctors are also taking advantage of this new craze and it's a great way to put some money in their pockets.  DISCLAIMER: Doctors are not bad, just greedy. haha I wish everyone who had a weight problem along with associated issues would get help to get to a normal, sustainable weight.  It's the ones that say "well I gained all my weight in the last five years" that need to try harder.  There I said it, try harder!!!!! DISCLAIMER:  Shari is the way and the light, buy her bracelets.

I completely agree with you but I do think that this lady and Shari are an exception to that rule.  She has similar problems that Shari has described in addition to problems in her back caused from the weight.  She's also close to 50 years old. Still, though I think she could have tried a little harder. She could have tried to eat a little less.  Here's the kicker. Her doctor didn't tell her to go on a pre-op diet to lose weight. He didn't even make her do a liquid diet.  In fact, she's wasn't even told to go mush after surgery. IN FACT, she's headed to Disney World right now and she just had surgery last Wednesday!!  WHAT THE HELL?? I was talking with her about it about a week before she had the surgery asking her questions and giving her my knowledge. She hadn't heard of anything I talked about. I was completely shocked. Not only that but she's going to Roc Bauman... my surgeon of choice.  I couldn't believe it, I've always heard he was strict.  I'm thinking she has a lot more issues than she's admitting too for him to do such a high risk surgery.

Hi Brenda, I just pray that those that make the decision to have this without researching first, don't end up with problems they are ill prepared to deal with.   I would hate to see 10 years down the road something horrible happening because of this, that's all.

HERETICAL POST NUMBER 19786: ("Mine Is The Light and The Way" Volume 44) People in good health with no co-morbidities who have invasive gastric surgeries are out of their goddamn minds. Seriously. Too much risk. Too much pain. Too much trouble. Fer reals. People who think the surgery will make them as fresh as an 18 year old daisy are also out of their goddamn minds. You end up looking like a deflated balloon, and that's on a good day. Skinny does not equal beautiful. It just equals "smaller." People who have significant life-limiting co-morbidities, understand that it isn't and end to a struggle but a continuation of one using a new set of artillery-- and understand that the work is mostly done by YOU and not the tool? I think they have half a shot at it. I'd like to believe I am in that third group. I would like to STAY in  that third group. Will it happen? Ask me in a decade.
