I went to a weight loss clinic years ago that taught us to multiply our weight by 10, and that's the amount of calories a day you could eat to RETAIN your weight.  Anything under that you'd lose. Wonder now if that's true.   Without taking diet pills or something, I don't know if I can lower my calories.  I'd starve! Maybe I'd better start eating lower cal foods, so I can eat in quantity. Or I'll start exercising more.  We'll see. Thanks for the tips!

Sounds like you answered your own question, you really may be on a plateau! Go with that for a while and see how it goes.

I know what you mean..it's hard to go around hungry. i did go get app suppressants from a bariatric doc, I could not do it alone, either - not for a sustained period of time. Now I use them periodically.  I love the bariatric foods - low calorie, high in protein. They help me not experience the hunger so much.

take a look at my food journal in my profile. You will see that I eat many small meals a day, as many as 7 or 8 some days!  I eat alot of protein, and some fats to keep satisfied. you can do it!
What I've eaten is here for the world to see
336.1 (8-1-07)/319.0 (12-28-07)/200 (goal for 12-31-08)/160 (goal)
Next mini goal is 290 by 1-31-08

From a person who spends her life in the pool-- (I coached varsity swimming, am a lifeguard, do regular water aerobics) I have to tell you-- while water exercise is great on joints and good for your aerobic health, it's not very efficient at burning calories. Part if this is because since the water is cooler than your body temperature, your body regulates itself to conserve so you don't freeze. A sad fact but true. Twenty minutes of even frantic treading water, at your weight, burns under 100 calories on a good day. Need evidence that pool exercise isn't the best thing going for weight loss? Ever have that experience when you swim your ass off that you crave a huge plate of spaghetti or carbs? Most people do. Now, ask a runner what they want to eat after a marathon- answer's usually "Nothing! Ew!" There's a biological reason for this. Most swimmers work off their fat layer in the gym. Which isn't to say "stop doing it"...I live and die by the pool: at 368 pounds, I had few other options. But I  try to slowly work in some land-based activities, where gravity helps me get some stuff a'burnin'. Maybe every other day, take a walk, or get some small weights and do a free weight routine. Variety helps!

Really?  I always heard that swimming (breast stroke style) burns as many if not more calories than jogging.  Hmm it's worth some research.

My understanding is that the answer's kinda tricky. Of all the strokes, you're right, breast stroke is the least efficient, and therefore burns most calories (when done correctly as a pop-up stroke, anyway.) You ever hear the question, "Which freezes faster, cold or ho****er?" When you put ho****er in the freezer, much of it turns to vapor, and what remains freezes faster-- it's that sorta thing. Putting a 98.6 degree body in an 80 degree pool makes you cold. When you are cold, two things usually happen: you shivver (which is a good thing for weight loss) but you also conserve heating energy-- meaning you don't burn fat as well. Problem is that once you warm up your body with movement, the shivvering slows, and the body's need to hold on to its insulation increases, making water exercise a less than ideal workout for most people. HOWEVER-- it is a very good workout for the very obese, infirm, arthritic and elderly, because there is so much less joint wear. If your choices are "sit on the sofa in pain" or "move your body in a pool", pool exercise is far and above the better choice. And it's good for you aerobically and cardiovascualrly! Ideally, as you are able, adding more land exercise is probably the best way to go, though--- mix it up!

The way I see it you have two options.

1. Get a heated pool and keep it cranked up to about 100 degrees.

2. Do a cannon ball, remain in the pool flopping around like a fish until you quit shivering and then get out and hit the sauna until you have produced a dripping sweat. Run out and immediately do a cannon ball into the pool and shiver. Rinse and repeat SEVERAL times.

i think if you're morbidly obese and do this with great enough frequency, you can probably bring on a heart attack in under an hour. So while you're there, you might as well also have a big plate of fettucine alfredo, right? I LOVE LOVE LOVE water exercise, but see it as a means to other things, and as part of a balanced plan. At the moment, it accounts for more than half of my planned fitness activity. It's helping me slowly condition my body so it can handle land exercise. I'll always swim though-- fat loss notwithstanding-- the other benefits are terrific!

I'm with Neecee on this one.  You're eating too many calories.  If you look on the back of a box of food, you'll see that an average female needs 2000 calories just to maintain - not to lose.   Also, spend some more time in the pool.  It's hot; cool off and get more calories burned.   You'll do great.  Just hang in there.

Drinking plenty of water will help you to flush the toxins and fat stores that are burning away also replenishing your fluids.
