Way to young and no where near fat enough is my opinion.   They don't comment on what she has done with nutrition and exercise so I don't know her history but from the disposition of the mother I'm willing to bet this girl hasn't really tried to lose the weight one bit.  In fact I think it's the mother's fault she's like she is.  Who buys the food????  She didn't need to spend all the money on the surgeries. She could have limited her food intake herself. She's the mother for petes sake.  I'd call them types, 'trash'.

good gawd!! first of all - did I hear correctly, did she have lipo & a tummy tuck, THEN the Lapband??  Jeezus!   The tummy tuck and lipo are almost more unbeleivable than the lapband.  Its inconceivable to me that any doctor would do the surgery - here OR in Mexico.  The mother is out of her mind!  The girl is only twelve, she's not done growing, and the risks!!!   Who is going to follow up on her?   I seriously doubt that all other options were tried before resorting to such a drastic measure.  I just hope the girl doesn't suffer any complications!

This is a really tough issue to find the right or wrong side of the coin on.   Being the mother of two morbidly obese teenagers I would probably do anything to help them to lose weight.  My 15 year old has talked about getting WLS but my 18 year old is fine with how he is, even though he is extremely overweight.  I would never allow my 15 year old to get the surgery, obviously, because frankly he would out eat it.  He is also a compulsive eater and I believe would cause himself more harm than good getting any kind of surgery.   Until he tries to do it on his own and really takes control of his eating, there is no way for me to determine whether he'll ever need medical intervention. I think to blame the mother is not fair.  For two years now I have embarked on a journey to help myself and my health.  For two years both of my children have watched and benefited from my journey in many ways.  However, they have to learn on their own now what they have to do to get their weight under control. While that child and parent were very laid back about this whole approach, my heart definitely goes out to them.  I think they took the "quick fix" method to help Brooke's immediate problem but I don't think they looked at the total picture.

"Blame" is just not a useful emotion. Did the previous years impact your children's health and obesity? Probably, let's be honest. But you have made changes, you have modelled changes. And you grew and learned, you shared your wisdom. As they grow, they now need to do the same thing you did-- and choose their own paths. The best thing you can do is model good behavior-- and I know you do. Sleep well at night, mamacita.

I don't know what to say.  (That's a first)  Although I have seen my oldest daughter go through adolecense obese, and seen the way the other kids treated her and also being a fat kid myself I'm not sure surgery at that age would even be an option. My DD is almost 20 now and with her attitude about her weight if I had the ability or the right to I don't think I would push her into surgery.  She's the resident "fat kid" and seems to relish the position.  She has now gotten to a place in her life where she is valued for her skills and intellect not her size.  Of course I worry about her health but until SHE decides she wants to do something about her weight there is nothing I can do.  She doesn't live at home any longer so the benefits of my improved lifestyle doesn't even extend to her most of the time.  Like I mentioned yesterday she works in food service and eats all that fast food daily.  They even have agreements with other fast food resturants to trade food. Oh back on subject, I think it was very irresponsible to circumvent all the red tape and take the child to Mexico.  Although the mother probably doesn't think so there could have been some underlying medical reasons why the child couldn't lose the weight, if they even tried other things before surgery.  They didn't indicate whether or not she did.  WAY TOO YOUNG!

There is some value in the struggle-- and there is some merit in being fat and secure. I went the same route, and don't regret it. If and when her obesity begins to negatively impact her health, I hope she has the wisdom and strength to recognize it, and let go of the idea that fat defines her, so she can be healthy at whatever size she needs to be. I am glad you are a good mama and love your fat and accomplished daughter. Kudos to you!

Shari, you don't know how much I think my daughter would get along with you.  Although there were times in high school that she would come home in tears over something somebody said to her, more times than not she had a very intellegient remark that she would throw back at them.  She even went head to head with the principal of the school her freshman year.  She had signed up for ROTC, the principal (a ~400 lb. woman) called her in the office, and preceded to tell her how obese children did not usually do so well in ROTC. When she was finished with her spill she looked up and asked my daughter, "did I offend you"?  My beautiful DD calmly looked her in the eye and told her "you don't offend me, you amuse me".  She then went on to explain that despite her weight this was something she wanted to do and could'nt believe that she would discourage students from taking courses that promoted physical activity.   She went on through ROTC and became one of the leaders her junior and senior year.  There was not one activity that they did that she didn't participate in.  She was an honor student throughout high school and is currently working 75-80 hours a week and taking online courses towards her degree. She has such an outgoing personality that anyone who takes the time to get to know her, loves her. She was never w/o friends, and had a steady BF throughout HS. Thankfully, she dumped his arse soon after graduating, the first and only time he hit her. She has never lacked self confidence and loves who she is. I just wish I could take credit for that but unfortunately I can't! I am guility of fussing at her for spending too much time reading or searching on the internet but she IS one of the most intelligient people I know so there is something to be said for being a bookworm!   PS. After she graduated the principal told me that although she and Jessi had a number of disagreements over the course of 4 years, she always respected her, and loved the fact that she didn't take any crap from anybody, including her....LOL!

I have a 9 year old daughter that weighs almost 150 lbs.  My 13 year old daughter weighs about 146 lbs.  My biggest fear is not being able to get control of their weights, especially my little one, and she having to resort to WLS in her 20's.  I can't fathom the idea of having her undergo surgery, of any kind, especially WLS or lap-band, as a child or teenager.  It was a terrifying decision for me to make as a grown woman when I decided to have WLS.  I would never risk my child's life.  Some would say I already am risking her life because she's overweight; however, I've taken steps to help her lose weight.  I am working so hard to educate her about healthy eating habits and portion control and we have recently started exercising as a family.  She's on a restricted diet at school for breakfast and lunch.  We no longer have any junk in the house, so there's no temptation.  She's losing slowly as she should at her age.  I would like her to lose 15 lbs. during this school year.  I think that's a healthy loss.  If she has a serious weight problem in her 20's that's effecting her health and quality of life, I would support her decision to have lap-band surgery in the U.S. if that's what she wants. You are a perfect example of what a mother should be like.  I think it's completely appropriate to blame the mother for the child's excessive obesity.  If she had taken the approach to her daughter's weight loss that you have taken then I feel certain that the daughter wouldn't be morbidly obese. Sure she may not be a toothpick but she dang sure didn't need this surgery yet.  If she had gone through her childhood with proper lessons in nutrition and health and still was obese then sure, why not, go for it.   Thanks for taking the time out for you children to teach them the better way!
