Family Part 2

Last night I was checking messages and I got an urgent call from my aunt in SC.  I called back -- the family is putting together a reunion on 9/1 (the Saturday before Labor Day) and she was wondering if I would come down and surprise my dad.  I posted earlier this month about the conversation DF and I had about my weight loss. I know most people in my situation couldn't wait to flaunt their new figures, but I totally choked on the phone.   I am just not ready for the crowd (I've attended two in the past and people come from all over) and worst of all, I'm not ready for the responses -- other than DF, I have not seen most of the family in seven years.  Besides, I don't even know if I could get part of the days surrounding the holiday off. Needless to say, I have not made a commitment to go.  Is something wrong with me?

My advice would be, if you enjoy seeing relatives, I mean actually like some of them and would look forward to catching up with them, go.  If not, don't.  Regardless of your weight.  (You look great though, by the way).  Family reunions are not mandatory, and if there really is going to be no one there that you would actually LIKE to see, stay home.  And on a cheekier note, if you do decide to go, may I suggest a t-shirt that says, "No, I did not have weight-loss surgery."  Cause with a 150 pound loss, you know they () will be thinking it.   All kidding aside, you have done so well for yourself, don't let anyone take away the satisfaction of your accomplishment.

Good or bad, attention can be rough.  I understand your concerns.  Think about it for a bit before you commit.  You'll make the right decision.

well, I am not clear why you don't want to go. Family is important to me, but i don't know YOUR family!  It is always worse thinking about it, getting all worked up, probably over nothing much. I would encourage you to go, practice saying simply thank you when people compliment you. If they ask questions, plan out a one liner...eating right and moving more, that kind of thing.  Get over yourself and go for the ones who are sweet and you love.  The others can go pound nails right???? Pray for protection that you willnot let the poison ones get to you and hold your head up, Girl.

first of all I want to say hello everyone.  I am new.  I read your profile and I have had relatives do the exact same thing to me.  For my sanity I have eliminated all the toxic relatives that I could.  They were only bringing me down.  If you are even having doubts about it I wouldn't go. It could make you relapse. MyheartisJandB

Hi everyone, This morning at WI (lost another 3.2, yay!) I told some members of the group about my concerns about the reunion.  They asked me how long it had been since the family saw me (7 years), and most of them said that I have to go -- I'll be the "star," which really isn't what I want at all. So right now things are leaning in the direction of going, but I haven't made a solid decision yet.  Thanks to all for your input!
