Fast food nutrition: this can't be right?!

I don't eat fast food, but I've been having naughty thoughts about fried chicken lately. Naughty, naughty thoughts.  So I'm online and decided to look up nutrition information for Popeyes fried chicken. My thinking was: if I complete my cardio this weekend, I might have some...I'll pair it with some home-cooked steamed vegetables...not because I think the veggies erase the horrible nutrition of the fast food, but just so I can fill up with minimal additional calories. According to Popeyes' website, a fried chicken drumstick has 110 calories. The information for KFC is similar: 130. Even if I take home the leg and weigh it to make sure it is the recommended size, this CAN'T be right. A tablespoon of oil has 120 calories. Deep frying soaks up so much oil, I can't imagine the leg has less than a tablespoon...right? That would mean the leg itself and breading have negative calories! I know the lesson is that fast food is evil and to just stay away...but I was wondering what your take on this nutrition information is. How would that be possible?

on sparkpeople, it says the leg is 140. this is very possible. keep in mind, the amount of meat on a drumstick is tiny so its very rare anyone would eat just one. it also shows that it is 8 g of fat and 440 mg sodium.  does KFC even allow you to buy only a drumstick? a plain drumstick without skin is 73 calories and 2 g of fat - so about half the calories and 1/4 of the fat. if you add on a thigh (since drumstick and thigh often come together) - that's 370 cals and 26 g of fat (!) - so without any sides or anything else, that's over 500 cals and 34 g of fat. i don't know about you, but i have much better ways to spend 500 cals (like ice cream etc). thats where the entire deal with everything in moderation comes into play. there is nothing inherently wrong with a friend chicken drumstick if you want to have one every once in awhile. obviously its not the most nutritionally smart choice, but you can certainly plan it in to a balenced food plan. keep in mind also that the nutritionals on restaurant websites can vary a lot depending on location, cooking style, what kind of oil, time soaking in oil, size of chicken leg etc. do they serve it right from the fryer to you or does it drip dry or sit on some absorbent paper towels? who knows. usually its better to overestmate anyway.

Thanks for your expert opinion Andy. I trust it! I really didn't think there was ANY way this was possible, even with a small piece. But at 140, I suppose it's possible. I would probably overestimate and put it down as at least 170 for my food diary. I'm assuming they allow you to order just one piece, because I wouldn't go for more. I would plan at the meal and eat it with some homemade sides. We'll see if I'm stil thinking about the chicken tomorrow Plans for the pilates reward are still on, but I have to get through another month and two weeks of training first! Eek.
