Hey Tali--- according to the website, one happy customer "came in at 365 pounds and left at 314" and can walk on his own. Judging on other patient stories we've heard, that might have taken a couple of years.

I came here in March weighing 368, and now weigh 304. Not only can I walk now, I can do water aerobics, ride a recumbent bike, and dance! We need to start charging for the OH Non-Ops board!

You are so right Shari.  It's pathetic that a facility that is supposed to be a professional organization with trained personnel in place to help obese people, seems to be totally clueless, uncaring and just downright dangerous when it comes to the health and welfare of it's residents.  While we here on the Non-Op board have found a true haven and are helping each other and ourselves get healthy.  I can't predict how much any of us are going to lose down the road, but I'm pretty secure in predicting that we won't be gaining hundreds of pounds!!

Initially I was drawn to the show. Then there was an episode about an young man with the most horrible case of leg lymphedema I have ever seen. I am not sqeamish at all but I got nauseous.  What bothered me was that they kept showing close ups of the swelling, ulcers, etc.  All this while showing the patient ordering Chinese food. In the final scenes they were discussing the option of amputating his leg, since he could not lose weight. I liked the dime bag analogy: it felt like watching someone OD on Heroin in a rehab facility.

As I recall, they blamed his leg issues on his diet and salt intake. It's LYMPHEDEMA, fer chrissake-- not freakin' menstrual bloat! How the hell are you gonna run a facility for morbidly obese people and not know how to identify or treat lymphedema? GAHHH!

While searching the internet on Brookhaven I came across a couple of message boards discussing this show.  The general consensus is that this facility doesn't come close to it's obligation to help SMO people.  I know that these shows are taped months in advance of them being aired.  I can't help but wonder how the public's disgust with how this facility is being operated is going to effect the facility, in general, and the next season of the show (if it airs next season) in particular.  I'm not sure what the objective was for airing this show, but I don't think they're getting whatever it is they were hoping for.

Well, sure they are-- they're getting paid. Also-- people are already clamoring to get their SMO uncle, cousin, or son in there-- families are so desperate to find care for their bedridden SMO relatives and friends. Yeesh.

Currently they have 75 residents and if what you're saying is true and people are knocking down the doors (I shudder at the thought).  Maybe they'll start actually helping the people they already have so they can make room for new people.  Or is that too much to hope for and they'll just build a bigger facility?
