Brookhaven Clinic (or whatever the name is)

I think "Brookhaven Clinic" is one of the most revolting shows on TV, in terms of sheer sensationalism and dehumanizing maltreatment of its residents. Last night, an "extremely morbidly obese woman" who is teetering "on the brink of death" (Huh? She's younger than I am and weighs what I did in January- Ed.) kept going downstairs to pick up food she'd ordered in. The manager's alibi is that he "used to" try to crack down on this, but then decided that they'd have to learn to deal with take out food eventually, so what the hell. Like this is all part of this gel-headed used car salesman's master plan. Puh- leeze. Addiction treatment is supposed to provide a safe haven for its residents to be away from the temptations of that things that trigger them-- a HAVEN (thus the name?) from temptation. You know a lot of drug rehabs that allow you to call your heroin dealer on the cell phone and meet you with dimebag in the lobby? Re-goddamn-diculous. But it adds to the plot, right? "Lookee Ethel, these sick fat *******s cain't even stop while inna hospital! Innat the sickest damn thang?" Spare me. I don't give a rat's ass what titillates middle America-- give these people the treatment they NEED, the help they require, and the dignity they deserve---and if they live there in perpetuity (the aforementioned woman has been there two years) and do not or cannot comply-- then free up a bed so someone who's ready can use the space.

Shari -- that's so funny.  You and I were typing a response at the same time and saying much of the same things.

I agree Tali, geez, it seems from what WE are allowed to view, that these people are not very well encouraged to follow the "program".  I'd like to see them use OA or some kind of "getting to the root cause" of the eating disorders. Its a sad, sad show.  I mean really,  whats next? Colonoscopies to go?

Yes, it is sad but more than that it just seems so wrong.  Wrong to have these people in a place that you would think they could get some help and yet they don't.  The more I see of this show the more it just seems criminal.  It might not be so bad if they were there for just a few weeks or even a few months, but some of them have been there for years without any real help.  Whose paying for this?  How is it funded?  Is it state, federal, private -- what??  Whatever... it's just wrong.

Tali--- after looking into it, I have discovered two things: 1) If this place exists, it's not under that name (not that *I* can find) 2) This schlock-fest is brought to us by ITV, the same swell Britons who brought us endless stupid weight-exploitation "documentaries" in the last decade-- many of which I was asked to be on but categorically declined when I saw the nature of what they actually create after their editing. Horrible people, truly. To be avoided.

You're right Shari, when I google Brookhaven I can find nothing about the clinic.  I was able to find stuff on the the show itself "Inside the Brookhaven Obesity Clinic" on the web but nothing about this clinic/hospital/nursing home whatever the hell it is.  So, did they give it a fictitious name for the show?  I know I probably shouldn't care this much, but this is really bugging me.

Don'****ch it anymore, really no reason to same thing every show. The one line that caugfht my attention was the intro where they call it " A REFUGE FROM SOCIETY" or something along that line. Isn't the purpose to assimilate back into society?

I am also someeone who has watched Brookhaven on TV and as someone who might qualify to stay there it is painful and discouraging to watch.  I spent almost 2 months 2 years ago in an inpatient treatment facility for eating disorders, and I think that was better that what is happening at Brookhaven.  I just don't think the people at Brookhaven are ready to deal honestly w/their weight issues.  I also think that a great many of them have MEDICAL issues that are keeping them there, it's not simply about their weight.  I also think that's why so many can't have WLS, because their bodies wouldn't handle the surgery well.  I feel compassion for the people in the hospital because they are suffering from an addiction that is controling their minds, and they're not capable of making sound decisions.  I do COMPLETELY agree with Shari's comments regarding bringing a dime bag of heroin into a drug rehab.  When I was in the ED center, we couldn't even have gum, let alone anything more nepharious.

I do think that the administrator of the office is a jerk.  I think he's trying to avoid conflict that's all, (Like me, Queen of the Co-dependents wouldn't know what that felt like.  =)
