New To This Board Denied For WLS.
Hello everyone. I am new here. I used to go on the lap band board. I was hoping to get the surgery but insurance denied it. I have appealed but denied again. I have started my healthy eating plan about 2 weeks ago. I was very disipointed when I get my denial letter. I just said to myself I can sit around and feel sorry for myself eating everything in site,or change things myself. I am an optimist I can change this. I have lost weight in the past 100 pounds about 19 years ago but slowly it crept back on. I have 80 pounds to loose. This is not impossible and I am ready to give it my all. My brother said just remember all things happen for a reason. I just looked at him. He had his leg amputated at Christmas time and he is saying this to me. I just thought wow I am disipointed because I can't have the weight loss surgery and here he is having to struggle everyday of his life. That is when I realised I can do this, I have a healthy body and the ability to improve my life. My husband was against the surgery from the begining but came to except it. He said yesterday you did it before and you can do it again. So here I go again . Just wanted to stop by tell you my story and say hello to all.
Hello, glad your here, i to couldnt have the surgery, my INC had a exclusion, so i turned to weigh****chers once again, and this time iam going to make this work. And you are right you can do this its not impossible!!! I to years ago did it on my own, i figured i can do it again to. Just hang in there, We all here are for each other. Wishing you the Best. Delilah
Hi and welcome!! I agree, if you did it before you can certainly do it again. Even if you had the surgery, in order to have continued success you would have to permanently change your lifestyle. That realization changed my mind about WLS -- if I have to change my eating and exercise habits anyway, why would I put myself through the surgery if I didn't absolutely have to? Glad to have you with us!!
I came here with the attitude, "If they don't approve me, I am already doing what I need to do anyway, and can just continue." In fact, while I started this journey in January with my surgeon, it wasn't until yesterday that I knew the surgery was actually going to happen...and I am down almost 60 pounds, just the same.
Fact is, with or without it, you need to decide on a plan you can live with-- for life. How many calories do you need to maintain your present weight? Start there and create a plan from that place. Fewer calories, increased movement-- there's really no secret to that.
After surgery, you'd be back here anyway-- just as I will be.
My post surgical plan is to continue on 1200-1300 calories a day for life--- with one "special meal out" per week over and above that. I am also going to add to my exercise as I become more able, if not in time then in intensity.
I think of it this way: for almost 40 years, I was lazy, and ate whatever the hell I wanted to in any amount that appealed to me. I am not deprived, I just already had a lifetime worth of splurges and indulgences. Now, I am just a person with an allergy to excess-- it makes me break out in lumps of unwieldy fat.
What's worked for me:
1) Slowly lowering my calorie intake to 1300 calories per day
2) Recording everything I consume and keeping it balanced (I use FitDay.com)
3) Exercising every day, for as little as 20 minutes or as much as I can stand
Hope you can find what works for you too. Try not to think short-term, but about what you can reasonably do for life. It seems to help.

This site has helped me immensely!!!!! The advice, the thoughtfulness and the twisted personalities are what have been keeping me on my toes
sounds like we're in the same boat! guess we better loose some weight before we sink it! I had finally decided I would try to have WLS - only to discover my ins didn't cover it. So guess I gotta suck it up, and get moving. I haven't started swinging in to action yet, but I would like to see my ticker start inching to the right....
Welcome aboard matey!
Welcome! So many of us have similar issues. I was determined to have WLS and I knew this was my only hope. I had a BMI of 50.1 and was desperate. I fought my insurance company for more than two years. DENIED. I appealed only to be denied again. My insurance pays for the procedure but it's an HMO and you know how that goes. They asked if I ate past fullness and when I said yes they said I wasn't a good candidate for a successful outcome. WTF? I wouldn't be 320 pounds if I wasn't eating past fullness. Isn't that part of my problem? Anyway I sat around for two years eating and laying around feeling sorry for myself. In October of last year I ended up a the hospital with chest pains. Scared the crap outta me for sure. They checked me out and my heart was fine but that was the wake up call I needed. I bought myself a bike and a good pair of shoes, changed my diet to protein, whole grains, fiber, non-fat dairy, fruits and veggies and I am down 111 pounds. So welcome and hope we can all support you as you offer your support to us. Don't lay around waiting on the insurance company. I wish I hadn't done that for two years but I can only look to the future. You can do this.
