How come every time I decide I will eat normal food (last night, pasta and chicken), then next day the scale reads 3.5 pounds higher? There's no way in hell I ate 3.5 pounds of food! GAH! Oh wait--- I *did* taken two Immodium Friday night. Hmmmm. Hmmmm? Also-- when recording my weight, I used to post every dumb fluctuation, but anymore, I record the smallest weight then ignore it for a few days as it goes up and down. Is that normal? I hate that this place has a scale. I don't like scales. I cannot own one-- they make me neurotic.

Come on now Shari, you know better than that, so I'm going to consider your questions rhetorical in nature.  But I'll play along anyway just for the heck of it.  It takes 3500 calories to gain a pound and I doubt that your meal consisted of 12,250 calories.  Anything and everything can cause scale fluctuations which is why it makes no sense for anyone to jump on the scale several times a day or even once a day, unless you're a mascochist.  Stay off the scale girlfriend.

You're right--- I DO know better. I like the positive reinforcement that hitting a new low gives, so I step on, hoping that's what I will get--- and I do, every 5 days or so...but between days? Whew. I blame my parents. They purchased this monstrosity. I'mma hit 'em inna head. My whole day yesterday clocked in under 1400 calories. Like my boyfriend says, "Where does that weight even COME from?" We have scientific minds and the not knowing is really aggravating for us dorks. Yah, most of what I say is rhetorical in nature. But feel free to beat the crap outta my head anyway!

I am with you and must agree with Journey... Stay off the scale...  I told ya'll I loss five and gained it back very next week because of Aunty Flo Flo....  I was angry.....  and knew in my heart of hearts.. there was no way I ate that darn much food.... but we must remember our extra weight... retains water... so if you are eating foods high in salt... know what to expect....  That scale is a beast.. First the news says that people who weight themselve frequently maintain weight better, then they say people whoo weight themseoves too much suffer with problems and obessions over weight....  Cannot win for losing.... I weigh myself on Mondays and Fridays.... just to see how I have done over the weekend and if my eating and workouts during the week help....

Hey Shari, I bought a book a few weeks ago having to do with getting back on track with your low-carb plan.  Since I do South Beach I picked it up. Somewhere in there it talks about the very fluctuations that you posted about.  What you are doing is completely right.  The scale WILL have flucuations throughout the week, and that is why they say to just record the number once a week.  If we could stay off the damn scale between then we'd be good to go!  Flucuations, as you know, are completely normal.  In the end it is the total sum that is the one we need to look for.   LOL No you didn't gain 3.5 pounds overnight!!!   I think this is a clear example of why we have to look at the larger picture, stick to our plans, exercise, eat right, take vitamins -- blah blah blah -- and not look at the number as the total sum of our efforts.

Daily scale hopping will make you crazy! It isn't real useful cuz our bodies are so much percentage water...whad we say...60% or so for most people. Eating grains when you are not used to them will cause cells to retain water more readily, good if you are about to work hard...bad when you scale 'sess.  In my readings about weight loss, our bodies react in ways when it knows we are dropping pounds..my body does that all the time - kind of a dramatic swing up, then down. It does not want to release the fat...most of us have trained out bodies well to become fat hoarding machines.  You know this is called homeostasis.  Our bodies like the staus quo, it is reacting to how we programmed it.
