alli vs WLS

The recommended fat intake is no more than 15 grams per meal...Which is quite a lot.  I'm not sure I eat that many in one day on most days.

i know i can't eat just a tablespoon of JIF. that's why  i know i can't keep it in my house! i bought the single size portions from a restaurant supply store that are 1 tbs/80 cals. but yes, its generally a level tablespoon. alli recommends 15 grams of fat at each meal. it is of course simpler to do things witout pills, wls etc but its obviously not easy or we wouldn't be in the middle of an obesity epidemic....

Yeah, I too was taken aback just a tad about the anti-alli crowd. Like you, I feel all tools are fair game...quite frankly I would try alli.  I've done waaay stupider things to lose weight.  Looks like only people with about 15-20# should use this alli.  More than that requires a more strenuous approach. Which is what RNY is...ALL 6 my 3D pals who have had it are new people and now that they are at goal are doing a great job of maintaining.  They are eating/drinking most things after on eyear out.  All those "unattractive" side effects have well-subsided.  I hear tell of people who may still dump after a couple years, but this is not the case for any of my buddies. Sure, the oily fecal stains image is present in the mental pic. I understand that those things MIGHT happen if one eats too much fat per meal. The other thing is that people MAY experience that for a short time, until your guts get used to it. Due to the indignities of old age, bathroom threats are not all that scary anymore. Nearly every one of my aunts and great aunts pees her pants when she laughs...and that is a lot. They are the laughing-est peeing-est bunch of old ladies I ever saw.

Who's to say a random Alli user is overweight because of eating too many fatty foods? Perhaps they have 2 large bagels with fat free cream cheese and a supersized cola for breakfast. I wouldn't wish a weight struggle on anyone, and if someone actually finds success with this stuff, well, great! I'm jealous! But in my eyes, it's not a tool. Just another blip in the already evil diet industry. The marketing and hype for this drug will be brutal, and I suspect the majority of people rushing out to buy it will have little understanding of what it works on, what it doesn't work on, or how they could lose the same 10-20 pounds eating delicious, healthy food. In the end, it's none of my business who takes it, and I'm not about to picket outside CVS and protest the stuff. But my heart actually sank a little when the news broke. The FDA approval, over-the-counter status is going to make it seem like a wonder drug. I think people would be better off taking their money and paying for a session or two with a nutritionist.

Hey Bud - Well, because my thought was "Oh, not another pill!" In general I am not a fan of weight loss products, unless you're talking about a treadmill. But I wish any person struggling with their weight the best, really, so if this genuinely works for anyone, that's great.

The strong feelings are for the product, NOT the people who use it. I should make that clear.

I see. I don't knock pills, I even take a couple of diet pills.  I've tried Cylaris.. which didn't do anything drastic, but if it caused me to lose 1.34 extra pounds.. I'll take it!  Right now I take RapidSlim SX.. Still nothing drastic... but if It helped me to lose a few extra pounds, I'll take it! I take this once every 2 days.. Once I've finish them, I won't be buying them again. I'm not too struck on "Hoodia".. Reminds me of Ephedra..probably somewhere down the line, we'll start  hearing about long term side effects and deaths.. I don't want to be in those stats.

I do keep a carb blocker (Natrol) handy  if  I want to act up.  Also I do take a extra chromium regularly. Not necessarily a diet pill, but it aides in insulin use and weight loss. Most of us know that the answer is not solely in a pill and probably will never be.

well yeah, sonora...that does rather describe me.  My diet is nearly fat free all day long, and moderately lowfat for most of my night meals.  I ain't exactly wasting away. I do think alli might be a success for me, though, even still.  If it does what it says it does, block some amount of fat, then to me that means it may help me block that many calories each day.  I am convinced that only people with a few pounds to go will find it useful. Like many have pointed out, it is not meant to used long term, hopefully any user will re-teach herself to chnage eating patterns.

I agree with the above post by Sonora.  I really don't care what people decide to do to lose wt.  I DO believe,  that some WLS are more difficult to live with, but people call it a "trade off" for the fast wt. loss.  As for me, I don't want to live with a "trade off", not right now anyway, when I feel I haven't given the journey my "all".  I feel that I need to learn a healthy way of losing/maintaining now, because that must be done anyway after a WLS.  I don't see any thing wrong with a person needing a surgical intervention.  We all have the same goal, just taking different paths to get there!

This whole subject is a lot like the Stone Soup Story:  yeah go ahead, lose weight with this magic pill/surgery/foodstuff...do these things along with eating right & exercising! I think the part that it the REAL trip here is that once you gain the weight, you are screwed on so many levels. Getting near or over  40 bmi causes your body to rebel. It becomes an uphill battle.  THAT fact brought me to seriously look at wls. I hope I now have the right idea...to treat obesity like the chronic disease it is and never take my eyes off it. i've said this before, all of us are under the impression that it's simple calories in/calories out...I'm not convinced this is as true anymore once the weight is gained to the magnitutde most of us are at. Or, worse, if it is true, the level of calories one must live with are im-freakin - possible. We act like skinny people *never* eat badly for days on end. Yes, i am acquainted with some skinnies who work super hard at it...i.e., fall unconscious off treadmills nibbling crackers. I know a gal who boils cabbage for her supper...that's it, cabbage most nights; this friend has blown out her hips/knees running like a fiend, she's truly lucky to be walking. Who can realistically live that way????  What choice do we all have but to keep tryin til something works???? Get fatter and more miserable?
