Sorry, I only eat the South Beach Diet things for lunch, so I'm not sure about the whole diet. I know for myself, I do have nuts once a day everyday and have lost 25 lbs since April 23rd, so it must be ok?

Nuts. Nuts make me....nuts. They have beneficial oils, and fatty acids....but they also have astronomical fat and calories. A quarter cup of the following-- and how many calories and grams of fat in each: CASHEWS--- 187 cals, 16 grams of fat PEANUTS---  212 cals, 18 grams of fat SUNFLOWER SEEDS-  186 cals, 16 grams of fat WALNUTS-- 196 cals, 19.5 grams of fat ALMONDS-- 210 cals, 18.35 grams of fat MACADAMIAS-- 240.5 cals, 25.6 grams of fat PISTACHIOS (in shell)-- 82 cals, 6.6 grams of fat I'd say any more than a few is bad news. This from a woman who-- no lie-- regularly ate a pound and a half in one sitting, thinking "Oh well, it's natural and better for you than chips." Bah! I still get a few here and there-- in my Kashi Granola Bar (with flax seed and almonds). That's about all I need.

As a veteran of the South beach diet, I can tell you that when I am on phase one, I pack a handful of unsalted, raw nuts and I have those as my snack. If I get hungry later on, like when I making dinner, I will then eat another handfull of nuts, or a part skin cheese stick. In my experience, when it comes to South beach, you can't really overdose on nuts, as long as they are raw, and unsalted. I mean, you should not eat an entire bag of nuts in one sitting, but don't feel guilty if one day you have 2 handfull's, as opposed to one. Nuts have good fats and oils that our bodies need to clean out other impure fats. WHen it comes to South Beach, phase 1 is the detox phase, and to go form overeating, to detoxing, is a huge change. Snacking on nuts is better than snacking on salt things that will get your sweet tooth going. Good luck, phase  is not bad, as long as you are prepared... That's the key to making it through to phase 2

STEP AWAY FROM THE NUTS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Here is my nut story, slightly encapsulated. I lost 140 pounds on South Beach so I'm pretty familiar with the program.   I discovered the "raw bar" at my local grocery store.  Nuts are good for me, South Beach said they were!!!!!  So I would go and buy nuts by the pound.  $7.99 for mixed nuts so I'd just fill up.  I'd put them in little containers, counting out all my nuts so I wouldn't overdo it.  After a while I figured I could deal with it so I'd put my nuts in a bigger container and count them as I ate them.  Well at some point I guess I forgot how to count.  14 pounds later, OMG, I swore off nuts.  Within one week I had shed 15 pounds and breathed a sigh of relief!!!! I don't think South Beach meant to include those big Brazil nuts or the Macadamia nuts. LOL So yeah, as with anything, all in moderation.  Nuts are high in calories and high in fat, but are really good for you.  Just be careful.

As said, nuts are very nutrient dense, and full of yes good things and high high high in calories. Now, if you trade out the second serving of the day of nuts for a meat serving, you might be okay.  No, you will not be able to eat as many as you might want. This concept was one reason I still got fat even after balancing my food:  there is no food plan for weight loss that will ever allow you to eat limitless amounts of any one kind of food.  Atkins people will try to tell you that you can eat all but the dreaded carbs, but the truth is, you cannot eat 3500 calories of pure meat when your body only needs 2500 calories and not gain. Atkins works because high amount of protein and fats signal your stomach/brain to be satisfied with less food.  The month i tried the first phase of Atkins when i tracked on fitday said that i took in only about 1200-1400 caloires, but talk about fun calories!  meats, sour cream, eggs, cheese....mmmmm. I felt more satisfied with less but more fat/protein filled foods.

I kind of eat like that naturally. I grew up on a dairy farm, so meat and dairy are my mainstays, even as I lose....I just throw in the occasional can of beans or fruit to round it out.
