I am all for you having surgery, especially if you need it to save your life.  But in your blog didn't you say something about along the lines of, "What does this say about me and wls?"  Maybe that's what they thought. Of course there may have been more to the message than that.  I don't know,  jmtcw.

What I meant by the comment was, "Does this mean I am more likely to be successful or compliant?"

Hi. I was the one who emailed her. I have no problem sharing what I told her in the message. In fact, why don't you post it here for everyone to read? I read some of your comments on your profile about how you are doing so well on your own and that you were conflicted about the surgery. I was simply saying that you ARE doing great on your own and you should be very proud of your success. WLS is only one option. And believe me, no matter how much research you do, there are bound to be a lot of surprises once you've done it. I know so so many women and men who have considered it, who have done it and who are thinking about it doing it.  ALL of the people I have spoken to that have done it were shocked to find out how difficult it was and many of them regret it. It is my belief that WLS should be an absolute last resort used only for those who are truly diseased and cannot, through any means of their own lose weight. You don't seem to be that kind of person especially after losing 40+ lbs on your own.  In addition, I really think you need to check the sensitivity at the door when you're dealing with a message board. You are laying yourself out for the world to see and you are opening yourself up to opinions that may not jive with your own. That's life. I am very supportive of your weight loss efforts because I would love to see you succeed on your own. I think WLS is like drivethru surgery these days, and I think it is becoming a bigger epidemic than the obesity itself.  And, when I have something private to say to someone on a board I PM them. Because that is the proper thing to do. So, please settle. I am not a random poster and I am here to stay. So, we should try to find a way to work with each other. Good luck with your journey. -j

I prefer to discuss things in a forum unless I know the person involved. I don't doubt your intentions were good, but having a decision that took me 6 years of investigation to make was "wrong for me" was something of an affront. Would you like a message from a stranger telling you why you SHOULD have the RNY?

You don't seem to be that kind of person especially after losing 40+ lbs on your own. This is where it's important to know who you're talking with: I am "truly diseased". What does that entail?  Let's see-- couldn't stand or walk, couldn't breathe or sleep, sleep apnea, a family history of 7 members with super morbid obesity,  pre-diabetes and blood sugar issues, endometriosis, breasts that rip my spine out of place all day long, a large pendulous pannus, and a broken vertebrum in by back that made me cry upon most movement. I'm pretty sure that qualifies me for "truly diseased." I know about 50 people who have lost far more than you and I *combined* and gained every ounce back....and I don't have the requisite confidence/arrogance required to believe that I would be any different than the 95% of those who lose weight only to gain it back...or of the 100% of my genetic forebears who are in that boat. Again, I appreciate the sentiment, but you and I do not agree on what's best for me at this time, and I took the private message as something of an affront on my own good sense. You're absolutely right that too many people have this surgery for all the wrong reasons. Luckily, I am not among them: my reasons are spot on-- and whether I have success or not with it, we'll see. Taking some time to get to know someone's a good way to avoid this sort of thing in the future.

Hey Shari, I noticed your post this last weekend on your decision for WLS, but didn't get time to reply.  I've seen your comments here and there on other posts about your pain and mobility problems and know that you are having health problems that can be greatly relieved with WLS.  From everything you've said, this has been a well thought out and researched decision.   I wish you much luck with your journey and hope you will post often to how it is going, even after your surgery.  I am in the beginning process of researching whether this surgery is indeed what I will need in order to get me to a healthier weight.  Being 376 (now 366) and 5'1" is very bad.  As you, I'm not looking into this for vanities sake.  I want to be able to keep up with my 10-year-old nephew, heck keep up with my DB and right now I can't.  I don't want to have to worry about diabeties due to my weight.  I'm hoping once I lose a significant amount that it will cure my sleep apnea, but we'll see about that.  I worry about falling and what would happen IF I broke a bone?  Carrying around this much weight is EXHAUSTING. Again, best of luck.  I'm rooting for you.  Seeing your posts in the beginning gave me a lot of encouragement that I CAN lose weight.   Melinda
