The Unbearable Lightness of Sig Ot's Being!

Or something. What I am saying is-- - remember how my Sig Ot was not losing weight, while eating a very lo-cal diet? He's now down from 379 to 350-- and just sent me an email that reads, "I just figured out I need to move it to lose." It's especially true for him, since it was the new sedentary job that did him in! (He went from 320 to 379 IN A YEAR!) Exercise is especially hard for us still, but we're finding ways to get it in. He walks about .8 a mile a day, then swims with me on Sunday.  I swim 3x a week, do free weights, and walk one or two times because walking still hurts. So between us, we've lost about 73 pounds so far. Which is good, because our eyes are starting to go to hell, so we need to be closer to see each other. ;)

wow...good for him, too. And I was thinking...your SO's experience kind of blows the whole bmr argument out of the water, too.  Nobody can tell me that a 350+ pound man would not lose eating low cal like that and not lose until he exercises?  C'MON!!!! yet, there it is. He's on his own graph, like a bunch of people are.

He'd tell you the BMR argument holds water too--- he was losing all along, just didn't recall his correct starting weight! (He's one of those "so smart that he's kinda dopey" guys, y'know.) He's also on a variety of medications that cause him to do weird things with water, and was not exercising as he could have been. And he's had the occasional Tastycake or hoagie more often than I have. Does any of that matter? Who knows?

I think the BMR is mostly on point (although it's hard to know what YOUR true BMR is)--- but that it's still easier somehow when you haven't screwed with your metabolism in other ways. I've never dieted, don't take any meds-- and I think that stuff works in my favor somehow. Sig Ot's been down this road a dozen times, only had minor success, and weight loss has always been very slow. I know there's no hard science to this-- but I also think mindset plays a part. He's a much more saturnine person, I am more mercurial. I'm a bit more of positive thinker- he's more of a cynic. There's probably something to the notion-- at least motivation-wise-- that you can do things more effectively when you really believe in your ability to make things happen.

There's other missing info-- First-- 1800 calories a day was probably too high for him. He's closer to 1500-1600 now and that seems to work much better. Also-- I was always a bigger overeater: I ate more than he does, and he's 5 inches taller and a guy. And I started with a much higher BMI-- I was around 62, while he was 54.4. His loss is naturally gonna be slower--- we'd just expected it'd be faster 'cause he's a guy. I have to lose another 22 pounds to get to where his BMI is today!

LOL @ the eyes comment. This is all so subjective.  While I kinda buy into the whole BMR thing, recently I calculated that I needed 2700 +/- a few, to maintain my weight of 228 pounds.  To lose I would have to decrease by 500 calories, either by food or exercise.  That being said, let me be the first to tell you that there is no way on gods green earth that I will lose weight on a 2200 calorie diet.  Right now I exist on a 1400 calorie diet, and have for the better part of the past year.  That works well for me, even with working out steadily.   I have long felt that I needed to go to a nutritionist or an endicrinologist just to find out exactly how my body worked.  i have been very successful in my weight loss but I'm just curious is there isn't something I am totally missing.  I think we all have to do what works for us, even if it's not exactly what is laid out in weight loss articles. Just my two cents.
