Wednesday Weigh In

Well I was worried a bit about this weigh in because I pulled a muscle in my left calf on Thursday last week and laid off walking a few days.  This morning, however, the scale read 439, putting me 11.5 pounds down from last week.  That makes a couple of goals for me.  The first is I'm down 75 pounds since 3/21.  Second, back when I first weighed in I planned two goals for the year: 442 by my birthday on Sept 10 and below 400 by the end of the year.  I beat my birthday goal by almost 4 months.  Lastly, this weigh in puts me below 60 BMI for the first time. Doing the happy dance again (now without breathing as hard)!

Way to go, Bert!!!  At this rate you are going to make your second goal by the time you were aiming for your first goal.    75 pounds, impressive. Wednesday is my weigh in day as well, except I only do it monthly.  I lost 5 pounds this month.  It's only 1 pound a week, but I'll take it.

Good job, Al!!!!!  I try to tell people that yes, of course, exercise is important, but caloric control is NUMBER ONE in weight loss.  Exercise is more like the designer frosting on the cake. Just makes it look pretty and hold up better.

By the way-- I forgot to tell you I tried out the recumbent at the gym. It was okay, but the foot straps were really tight and I didn't know how to change them, so at about 7 minutes I was literally crying from the foot pain and got off.  Without that-- I could have hung in much longer! The good news is that I did hit the 118 bpm that they suggest, but it was a hell of a lot of work, since my resting rate is more like 60 bpm. Next time-- no tight foot straps...and screw the heart rate thingy-- it's based on an average sized fit 39 year old, anyway, and I simply ain't her! I thought I was gonna blow a gasket! My BMI started at 61 or something. Congrats on the new, lower beemer!

I never put the footstraps on my recumbent cycle, or rather, I think I put them on and then took them off within a week.  I never need them and I often adjust where my feet are on the pedals (using the toes to push, using the heels to push, etc).  You also find yourself early on playing all kinds of games with your knees--close in, spread wide-- in order to use other muscles during a session.  And it does take time to build up, but something is better than nothing.  I started out at two ten minute sessions a day back in January.  As far as the heart rate monitor, mine says I get up to anywhere from 120 to 150 in my sessions.  Early on I would get over 160 and when that would happen I could really feel my heart beating.  My resting rate is in the high 60s, low 70s.  I also wiggle my butt up and down the seat during my sessions because I find that the most comfortable position for pedaling often wears on my butt after a while.

In any case I'm really glad to hear you tried it and hope the foot thing doesn't turn you off too much.  I know you swim, but other than swimming I think the cycle is one of the least impactful ways to exercise at a high weight and it's become the core of my exercise program.

I mix it up these days, Bert-- walking, free weights, swimming, water jogging. I am pretty sure I can do 15 minutes if my feet aren't...bleeding!
