Worse than I thought

Hey everyone, Well my DB and I went shopping yesterday and we picked up our first scale.  I went through and found two that had a weight limit of 400.  Well DB is cute and wondered about another one with only a 330 limit.  I told him it had a lower limit and I didn't like it.  Anyway, we got the one with the higher weight limit.  We got home and I set up the scale and stepped on it only to see a number I never imagined.  Sure I knew I might have gained weight from last year, but WHAT THE HECK?!!!  I was 347 this time last year and my new weight is 376.  Now that was a shocker.  This is the highest weight I've ever been, or at least known about.  It really made me stop and think about what my next steps should be.   This morning DB got on the scale for the first time in years and found he weighed the highest he's ever been at 280.  He wants to be at 160.  I actually let him weigh himself in private and then asked if it was more than he thought.  One thing led to another and we revealed our weights to one another.  After letting it sink in for awhile I brought up some ideas for myself and he really listened and agreed.  Soooo, my new plan is to keep tracking what I eat in my meal/exercise diary.  I started that this last Friday, before the weigh in, so I could see what I was eating, good and bad.  This way I have everything written down along with the exercises I did.  I have been exercising in one form or another since this last Thursday...another AWESOME feat.  I'm very proud of myself for at least moving every day for a minimum of 30 minutes if not longer.  I'm going to still be working on my diet by bringing in veggies and fruits and drinking more water.  I'm also going to have a talk with my regular doctor in a month during my yearly about starting the process to see if insurance would cover WLS.  I'm not saying I'm going to do it, but I thought you know it only makes sense to start the process and if I find six months down the road nothing I'm trying is working, at least this process will be in the works.  In the meantime, I'm giving myself a month to work on this diet without any type of structure.  If I find it's not working, then I'm going to do WW.  Since I hate the treadmill, I've ordered two more exercise videos, one being Leslie Sansone's Yoga.  I also did this on Friday, before the weigh in.  I also have the 1 mile LS Walking Away the Pounds DVD that I'm using and definitely enjoy. Anyway, wanted to share my shock and dismay with what the scale revealed.

I can only respond to I understand your plight.  I am glad to hear you are keeping a food journal and that you are exercising daily.  I too looked into wls and it was excluded in my insurance. My DH had the vsg on 4/17/07 and I decided since he was going to HAVE to change his eating lifestyle I would try this thing myself. I have followed his plan almost perfectly and as of today I am down 17 lbs. I had lost 6 lbs in the three weeks prior just not eating any junk food an cutting back on regular size meals. Please ask us all questions we will do our best to help you answer them. Hang in there. Patience

Wow--- it happens, Melinda. My BF went from 320 to 379 in just a year last year, and I've always been a much bigger eater than he has. I think once you hit a certain weight, it can pile on VERY quickly.

I don't know how you log your intake, but we really like FitDay.com, although it takes some commitment to put everything that you eat in there. What's worked for us is sharing our log-ons, so we can watch each other's choices and progress, and share ideas. We decided to invent our own plan-- which was to start with about 2500 calories, and slowly reduce that to 1800 a day for him, 1300 for me, high protein, low fat. It's been good!

Also-- it's great that you can walk like that-- I really can't. But one thing I do that's a good workout despite the title is Chair Aerobics-- all you need is a chair and a couple 3 pound weights and you're off!

I gained from 328 pounds to 368 in four years...and have gotten back down in a couple months, and believe me, I am seriously lazy. It can be done, with some commitment. Best of luck to you!

I know it was a shock to find out what you really weighed, but at least now you have a starting point to go down from.  It's better to know than to be in the dark, kidding yourself.  Good for you! Denise Phares
