Howdy !! I read about oolong or wulong tea a while back and had asked some questions here about it. Seems no one has really tried it here.
What I know about the tea is that is does burn twice as many calories as green tea when it is consumed on a regular basis. (without sugar) It does contain caffeine but not nearly as much as coffee. About 3 cups of green tea will burn around 75-80 calories. So if it is true that drinking the oolong tea burns twice the amount of calories as green tea then that means you can burn 150-160 calories a day just by drinking the stuff. Add about 15 minutes of strenuous exercise or 30-45 mins of moderate exercise and you'll burn well more than 500 calories a day. If you're eating 5,000 calories a day this isn't going ot amount to a hill of beans but if you're eating 1800 or less this is going to definitely contribute to your weight loss. So I guess what I am saying is that oolong tea is not a fix-all for obesity but when it is used along with proper nutrition and exercise you are sure to lose weight.
I believe the doctor has made this suggestion to you to help ween you off of the coffee and jump start your program. You probalby drink your coffee with milk/creamer and sugar like most people do. I think it's the sugar here that the doc is trying to get you to stop. I drink coffee on a daily basis but I don't use sugar and I use very little cream (about 5 calories worth). I replaced sugar with artificial sweetener like splenda or sweet-n-low. Aside from the sugar and creamer I do not believe that coffee makes you gain weight. In fact it is known that caffeine does help you to lose weight, at least until your body becomes immune to its affects. So in a nutshell if you can give up the coffee and switch to the tea by all means go ahead. There are also other ingredients in the tea that your body will greatly benefit from. More so than the coffee. Wulong tea promotes better skin, healthier teeth, and strengthens your immune system (antioxidants).
In summary, switching to the wulong tea from the coffee is a win-win situation. It's much healthier than coffee and does promote weight loss but don't look to it as a modern day miracle or panacea. For me, I'll drink coffee because it tastes good and my body love a stiff jolt in the morning! :)
