so chris, you inspired me to give this a try. i had seen it before and had a friend try to convince me to do it with her but i always was like i just want to run for 15 minutes straight. i would try running, get to like 7 minutes and then not able to run anymore.  so i did the first session sunday and it went well. i wasn't completely disciplined and ran for 90 sec or 2 minutes if i was feeling good or was in the middle of a good song. my legs were really sore on monday! on my off day yesterday, i did 30 min elliptical and had my trainer. today was more running. i was very strict this time and did exactly 60 sec jog with 90 sec walking. it felt really good. i was actually surprised that i could run that much! my first mile was like 12:15! plus it was good that it was so short - i discovered facebook this morning - bad idea! very addictive and it broke into my work out time so i only had a half hour. i did the plan for 28 minutes (3 of those was warm up). anyhoo, just wanted to tell you that i was inspired and its all good! now if i could just lay off the jelly beans....

Aww!  That's awesome!  I'm flattered that I was an inspiration for you!  You're a very strong willed and determined person. I'm positive you'll succeed.  Hopefully after I see the orthopedist I can start back on this program again. I already feel like I'm not going to lose anymore weight until I can exercise. Funny how that happens huh?  Before I thought it was overated and uneccessary. lol  Jelly beans eh? Never been a big fan unless they're the tropical really fruity kind.  I bought some sugar free ice cream bars and some sugar free fudgecicles. Who knew they'd be so yummy. I have a hard time staying away from the ice cream bars and my wife has been eating 3-4 fudgecicles in a sitting while I've been at work. I've got like 2 left out of the whole box!!  She's evil! heheh Ahh well, I suppose it's better than eating the other snack foods we used to keep in the house.

you can lose weight without exercise - of course its better to do it but if ou want to  lose a pound a week, you need to cut 500 cals out. so that means you can eat 250 cals less and work out 250 cals. if you can't work out, you can cut the 500 out of your food. oh heavy food days, you can spend more time on the fitness end of things.  you have to watch out for the sugar free and diet foods. honestly, i don't have anythign bad in my house but that doesn't mean i don't have binging issues occasionally. i'm just eating popcorn, SF pudding and oatmeal rather than cake and cookies.

U guys both ROCK!  And Chris, don't feel so bad about not being able to work as hard. I am living proof that what goes in your mouth is 75% of why we are fat.   Exercise does many good things for us, but seriously, most of us (unless you are a competitor of any kind) don't burn *that many* calories. Get the #$%^ over that right now! There must be hundreds of other things you can do besides running. If I were u, i would start doing even 15 minutes most days of crunches, leg lifts, lunges, etc to start conditioning your body.  Try biking, too!  Chris, you are so very inspirational.

You're too kind! :)  I hate all that stuff lol.  I really like running because it's a go anywhere type of exercise and it costs NOTHING!  I know walking is the same but for me if I'm not out of breath falling on the floor about to die then I just didn't work hard enough. Walking never makes me that tired.  I do like riding bikes too. In fact I did that for a while in Florida.  The only problem with biking is it's so expensive. You can't just go to wal-mart and buy a bike.  Those bikes suck!  I tried that and ended up returning the piece of crap. I spent almost 500 bucks on a good bike only to give up on it. I ended up selling that bike for 80 bucks to a friend who biked regulary. (Used that money to get back to Louisiana after I went broke in Florida.) Anyways, before I get off on a tangent in Andreas thread, running just seems like the only thing I want to do and if I can't do it I just feel like it's all over.  I hate that I feel that way. I'm contemplating a walking routine to replace it but this is two steps backwards! I'm back in the contemplation stage, before I was in the action stage! Ugh, it's disappointing.

I know you feel disappointed - you were so proud of yourself - I'm just sayin', don't fold up and start getting down about it.  I totally admit, there is NOTHING like running.  The way it makes ya feel, it is hard and challenging and gives back lots of feel good.  But one thing about it, all my friends who were running snobs, without exception, every one, cannot run any more once they hit like 45 years of age.  It is very hard on a body.  Anybody needs to learn to cross train - sure there are some high impact, high caloire burners, but hellllooooo, you're buying a one way ticket to injury, this youth does not last.  Just get going on conditioning other muscles - you need the whole body workout anyway, just get going on that!!!!! PUT YOUR HEAD ON THE MONITOR NOW so I CAN SLAP IT. Yes, we all tried to cheap out and buy the wallymart bike - they so much suck.  Right now at my best bike shop in town, there is two bikes there for ~$300, very nice bikes.  They once in a while have reconditioned ones that go for cheaper than that.

I found my self looking for walking plans a second ago but I dunno. Walking is for the elderly and super morbidly obese people who can't do much more! I'm young and I'm no longer super obese, now I'm just morbidly obese. :)  Therefore, walking just won't work for me, at least not as a strenuous exercise. I don't mind walking but not as an exercise. It is pleasant to take a stroll in the park.  I do like riding bikes, maybe I'll see if I can splurge on one. I'll need on of those super wide 6" thick seats to start! Man I remember the chaffed sore gooch days! OUCHIE!  I'll think I'll look into the reconditioned or used bikes for now as you suggested. Gotta do something and I think as soon as this cold weather goes away I will have my motivation back. OH yeah, and after vacation, too!  Hmm, I'll be in the mountains, maybe I can get some hiking done. Speaking of vacation, expect me to coem back next week with a gain.  I still plan on adhering to my eating less plan but I am going to eat whatever I want. That means if I want some cheesecake I'm gonna eat it, if I want fried chicken I'm gonna eat it. It's vacation and I need a break from the norm. Sticking to the eating less and drinking nothing bu****er routine should insure against falling back into the overeating habits.

hey! i'm not super morbidly obese and certainly not elderly and i walk!!! mainly i walk when i'm too tired to do the more coordinated routine that an elliptical requires (like balence). and there a lots of ways to challenge yourself - believe me, there are ways of walking making you tired. how about heading up to Boone on the weekend and walking up a mountain. that will make you tired.  last night i went walking for awhile with my friend on a path we'd never been on. we had a plan to wrap ourselves back in a circle so we could stop at the grocery and buy some stuff to make a healthy dinner. bottom line is that you do what you have to do. there is never really a good excuse. find ways to entertain yourself. bring a portable DVD player to watch while you bike at the gym. arrange walking dates with your friends or  wife rather than meeting them for lunch. talking to people definitely  helps to make the time go by. most gyms have an arm ergometer (or something like that) which works totally from you arms for peopel who cannot use their legs due to injury. flexibility is a huge part of lifestyle change - that means when the plan you planned doesn't work out, you do whatever you need to do to try and accomplish the same thing. example: i always arrange to stay at hotels with gyms but sometimes these are really crappy/closed/they lied on their website and don't really have one. that means i will do some stairs (you can ALWAYS find stairs!) or walk around outside if its a safe place.   loosen on the all-or-nothing mentality! there are lots of options in between running and sitting on the couch doing nothing. some kind of movement is good. try and get your 10000 pedometer steps in - that another tool that can helps you when you're tired or injured because walking around the grocery store counts as steps. make it a goal to increase by 1000 steps eachweek.  enough lecturing...

Lol, how do I manage to take over threads and turn the topic of conversation to myself?  Wow!  I wasn't trying to say that walking is only for old and super fat people, rather I was trying to say that it's not what I want to do for a strenuous exercise. I know that you can do all types of walking that will  burn as much or more calories than running but it's just not as gratifying in my opinion. Nothing wrong with walking at all and even skinny people should do it.  I'm just a lost cause. The only type of exercise I seem to like is the running and maybe bicycling. I hate gyms, fitness machines, water aerobics, aerobics period, that curly headed fruity tooty guy, etc. Nonetheless, you are right.  I need to just suck it up and change because I can't run right now and I need to accept that and get moving again. I think the thing I dislike about walking the most is that it takes so long to get your exercise in.  With running you can go for 10 minutes and get the same as 30 minutes of walking. Yeah, yeah, walk faster, I know but do you know how awkward it feels to walk faster? (of course you do, duh. lol) okay, i'm just whining now and making excuses.  I never did reply back to it. I honestly couldn't think of anything else to say. lol, you explained it well and the site did a great job of explaining it.  I go back there quite often and re-read it.  I try to make sure I know where I'm at to explain my feelings. It has helped me to understand why I've failed so much and it's helping to make baby-steps towards positive change. Negative change is so much easier though! :D  Where does "want" come into play in the stages of change though.  I suppose it's sometime during contemplation.  You gotta "want" to make the change before you actually prepare to make adjustments.
