I bought a el-cheap pedometer from wally world last night.  After I had done my "jalking" it said I had taken 4,625 steps.  Seemed a bit high but I was impressed!  I decided to order a better, more accurate one. (below) Does anyone else use one?  What do you think about them?  Originally I just wanted a stop watch to keep track of my exercise time but I thought it'd be neat to see just how much walking, jalking, wogging I'm doing. Here's the one I bought. http://www.amazon.com/Omron-HJ-720ITC-Pocket-Pedometer-Versi on/dp/B000MN92WM

Yeah, I have used the freebies, it's a fun way to stay inspired. I'm sure the ones you pay for are far superior. Then, I graduated from that to counting steps per minte:  timing one minute and seeing how many steps I did (of course this applies only to "official walking time"), then I would only track how many minutes i did and try to get to 10K steps daily. My "typical" pace is 130 steps per minute when I am *wogging* (you jalk, I wog). When I am walking with the kids, it's more like 90-100 steps per minute. So I kind of know how fast I am going after all these years (I began walking at least 5 days a week 21 years ago (not a typo - 21 years ago).

Wow that's some longevity there! 21 years!  I only hope I can do it for that long. I suppose it's just another lifestyle change.

Purty dang good if I say so myself!  Not bad for a rookie!  Everything does add up.....I use one everyday on top of my 1/2 treadmill and try to get to 10,000 a day Here's what it adds up to! Maybe you have heard the recent guidelines about walking 10,000 steps per day. How far is 10,000 steps anyway? The average person's stride length is approximately 2.5 feet long. That means it takes just over 2,000 steps to walk one mile, and 10,000 steps is close to 5 miles.   2.5 miles not bad not bad not bad.......keep it up!

That was 2.5 miles on top of what I walk at work.  We have a large parking lot with an overflow lot even further out. I park in the overflow lot. I'm all alone out there! lol  Anyways, it's about 200 steps to my seat from there. I make that trip 4 times a day.  Additionally the bathrooms are very far away and I make a lot of trips from the amount of water I drink. I've had my pedometer on all day and so far I've accumulated 2,544 steps. Because this one is really cheap I would probably subtract at least 50 of those from the bumps, seat shifts, and whatever esle I've done.  I'm still trying to figure out how in the world I'm gonna hit 10,000. lol

i love my pedometer! they are a great way to track what you're doing, especially if its a day when you can't work out or are too tired and need to rely on the ADLs. i once hit 30,000 while being a tourist in NY. i'm not a believe in the high tech ones because i find that all pedometers seem to fall off/break/stop working so i just buy the $9 at target. the kind that open/close are better because they don't could as many of the seat shifting/pulling pants down steps. i know on mine you can open it and it stops keeping track, which i do if i change clothes or something. it also tracks distance and calories. i don't think most of them are that reliable at all, but they give you an idea of what you're doing.

The one I bought from wal-mart was about 5 bucks. It's very small and noisy. It registers even the slightest shift in my seat. Too sensitive. That's why I researched them online and from the reviews I read the Omron had the best accuracy. That's not the real selling factor though. I'm a techie and this thing will keep track of 7 days and comes with a USB cable and software to download it to your PC so that you can graphs, charts, etc and track your progress over years. Since this is a long term thing, I figured that was just too cool!   I'm glad to see other people use these things. I was beginning to wonder if I had one pushed over on me! :) I was in Wendy's ordering my grilled chicken sandwich and I found my self lifting up my shirt a bit so everyone could see my pedometer. Kinda like when you got a cell phone or a pager as a teenager you wanted everyone to know how cool you were! HAHAHAH!  I'm such a dork!
