Sure they do, BUTT (there's always a big butt somewhere, eh?) What is bad, is what does drinking those things really teach you for the long term. If used for the short term benefit of getting the weight off, they serve that purpose, i am told. Definitely, I would try a medically supervised one, like Optifast - that is one I have never tried. What that does is take the weight off, then they work with you to teach eating skills.  Hi Lynn - welcome!!

I've had a few friends who have gone on liquid diets for a week or two at a time in order to get over a plateau. Usually worked quite well for them.  I remember my mother going on a liquid diet when I was a child, though I didn't understand it then.  She lost a considerable amount of weight and had no health issues with it. When she finally started eating normally again she did keep the weight off but she never reached her goal weight.  (Reminiscing....Seems my meals were quite bland and boring in those days.....)

I am currently undergoing a "semi" liquid diet (also known as a Protein Sparing Modified Fast....I do get soups and sweet treat at night).... I am under a doctor's care (it is highly recommended)....I had to go through a battery of tests to see if I was even healthy enough to participate (heart, liver, kidneys, you name it)..... It is a pretty serious diet with definite health ramifications.....I am only half-way through week two and know I have lost at least ten pounds (I weigh on Thursday)..... BUT (see?  another one) behavior modification should be included in it.... I must exercise (walking is good) for 30 minutes a day no matter what (on top of being more active throughout the day) Drink gallons of water (not really but it seems like it) 64 oz. helps all the organs work properly And  I will receive education on how to eat during the refeeding phase (modified South Beach) to continue being successful on my weight loss journey, otherwise all the sacrifice was for nothing I wish you luck....but please don't do it on your own....it helps to go through it with an empathetic ye****chful eye and know that someone is monitoring your health and well being.....

Hi Lynn13, I just happened to venture on this side of Obesityhelp.com and saw your post.  I went on a liquid-fast under the supervision of Medical University Hospital of South Carolina's Weight Management Program.  I drank only shakes for 20 weeks and lost 130lbs.  I lost 30lbs the first week, but it was mostly fluid-weight.  Sadly enough, I was not able to maintain the lost because I went through a breakup immediately after I stopped the diet.  Needless to say, I am scheduled for the Gastric bypass on May 4th.  I said that to say, you CAN do it!  All the best...

Hi Lynn 13 I just came on board and I a doing a liquid diet.  Opitfast 800.  I can say you never get hungry.  I have lost 7 lbs in two weeks which is unusual.  I think you usually lose more.  My body thinks it is starving to death and hangs on to every little fat cell. It is good not to have to worry about what you are going to eat.  I just have to decide Vanilla, Chocolate or Strawberry.  The first week was the worst.  You can't eat and you feel kind of sluggish, but the second week is much better.  I have my energy back.  The first weekend I had to keep very busy or sleep because I wanted to eat....not because I was hungry, I just wanted food!! I know a girl at work who did this diet and lost 62 lbs.  She did well at first keeping it off but then she gained 20 lbs and got scared.  She is back on the diet again to lose the rest of her weight. Good luck it you try liquid!

Optifast 800 is used under a doctors care.  When you sign up for the program the doctor provides the food.  You have to go through some lab work before you can start on this program.  You go back once a week to weigh in, talk with the doctor and get a new supply of Optifast.  I have lost 12 lbs. so far and I am beginning my fourth week.  It is an 18 week program.  12 weeks are the liquid diet only and the next six weeks are slowly adding food back in your diet. I have learned if I have the will power to complete this program, I am well on my way to controlling the amount I eat from now on.
