exercise suggestions for super obese
Hi all! I have been a lurker for a while and I know you offer great advice and ideas so I am hoping that you can help me out.
I will be having open rny at christmas time since I am a teacher and will not have time off until then. I am working on my final clearance testing with my pcp.
Since I am waiting until christmas, I would like to start changing my habits and adding exercise to get off some of this weight before surgery. I am currently 430lbs. and 5'9". The problem is that even though I'm motivated to exercise, I can't seem to do much right now. I have the walk away the pounds series and it is great but 5 minutes in, my back is killing me. Does anyone have any ideas of how I can get more exericse in now until I lose a bit and can move a little easier?
Hi Dee,
I can relate and started off heavier than you. I was willing but the body did not let me do what I wanted to.
Here are a few suggestions, one if you feel comfortable enough go to a pool and do a water areobics class this will allow you to help keep the stress off of your joints and back. Another is to just start to walk at your own pace. I am sure the video is great but it may be unrealistic for you to do any intensity at this point and you just need to take it slow. Start with a 5 - 10 minute walk and stay that way for a week or so and then increase a little each week! Remember that you may not have been doing any exercise for some time and don't expect to jump right into it.
I too was going to have surgery and found a weight loss program that changed my mind / life. I have currently lost 225 pounds, I still have more to go but I am heading in the right direction and know I will be able to keep it off!
Keep us posted on how you are doing and no more lurking

Dee,
I know this might be very hard for you to do, but I did do it and I was around your weight. I went to the YMCA and did swimming. It will help you with most of your joint pain, if you go at certain times you don't have to face any crowds. I know for myself that was a fear. You might also look into band exercising, you can sit and do it.
Good luck!
Amy
