One of my favorite sayings is "Strive for progress, not perfection."

Its important to keep up your supplements. If you find yourself struggling with that, resolve to do something about it, like finding a pill minder or setting your phone to signal you to take them.

I know a lot of people do regain. Its heartbreaking. But the one thing that seems to be common in those that succeed is the awareness that reaching goal is not an "endpoint." This is a daily battle, and one must fight it forever. It helps to be mindful - of the pounds lost, of all the non-scale victories, of all the ways that life has improved, of the great accomplishments, and of the commitment it takes to prevent going back to a place where we were so unhappy and unhealthy. It takes focus.

Sure there are days when we don't do everything right 100 percent of the time. Its how we handle those detours that will determine how successful we continue to be.

Keep up the good work. Best of luck to you!

Topic: RE: Wrapped up in "what if"s...
Here's the scoop from my experience - when I first began to consider WLS I didn't tell anyone - not even my hubby - that I was going to the consultation. When I got there and sat through the whole presentation I was physically ill - I mean, what the heck? Cutting my stomach in half to lose weight? What was I thinking? It was horrifying. BUT - as the days afterwards went by I seriously began to reconsider - I was 50 years old and in the worst shape of my life - at my highest weight, about 250 (I'm 5'4") and depressed and sick of the whole dieting ups and downs and losing and gaining and depriving and binge episodes - I was sick of it. So, I made a deal with myself. I would start the process (it took over a year to jump through all the hoops) and try to diet AGAIN and by the time everything was approved and I had a date if I changed my mind then I wouldn't go through with it. Well over a year later I had only lost about 15 pounds, I had researched all the ins and outs - pros and cons - and decided I was sick of living my life the way it was and I was going to change it. Radically. So I went into the surgery very well educated, well rehearsed, and in the frame of mind that was healthy and determined. it's been almost 2 years since my surgery (April 29 2010) and I feel and look great, and it's the best thing I ever did for myself and my family. I'm healthy, I love the way I look and all the things I can do now, how active I am - I do not regret it for 1 second. Now, to be fair - I've had no problems related to the surgery other than a few low blood sugar attacks and some gas and diarrhea, I lost a total of 86 pounds after the surgery and since my highest weight its been about 101 pounds. I'm not as thin as I would like to be, but I am totally happy with what I can eat and how much.  I wish I could afford plastic surgery on my stomach - and I do have loose skin, but nothing the clothes can't hide.

I would do it all over again in a heartbeat.

Wow, 4 years out and maintaining! That is a dream! I know so many that gain a lot of weight back after the 2 year mark - I am there now and recognizing some pitfalls and cravings that just weren't there the first year or so.....The surgery is a great tool, but not a "cure" I'm finding out. However - I'd rather have the tool! LOL!  I also have a "baby boy", but he's home for 2 more years before going off to college.

I am getting forgetful some days in the vitamin department - if there's one thing I'm falling down on it's remembering to take all of the supplements at the right times.

Oh well - nobody's perfect, right?

Hi, although new to the group, I have been to Dr. Schmidt's office to see his associate, Dr. Trivedi. The office is run very well. They have an excellent reputation and their stats are great. Maybe I will see you there. I'm scheduled for VSG in July 2012. They are listed as a Top Doctor in NJ.

Hi Mary!

I'm four years out and doing great, maintaining my 140 lb loss give or take 6lbs.

I miss the NJIGT's (hint, hint, Tom Casola) and hope we can revive that soon.

I'm preparing to send my baby boy off to college in the fall, and wondering what I'm going to do with myself in my empty nest.

On the D issue, I've had a problem with mine too, and yes we are better off with the dry form. I also take my D in two doses instead of one, with calcium and magnesium, and keep it separate from any source of iron (including multivitamins) and also thyroid replacement, all of which block calcium absorption. Also remember that A, D, E and K are fat soluble, so some fat (good fats, of course) in the diet help retain those in the body.

Hope this helps!
