Topic: 2nd Lap Band Surgery

Has anyone had the lap band (or Realize Band) put in and taken out and a 2nd band put in...not because of slippage, but for other reasons?

At 250lb, I had my first lap band surgery in April 2012. My surgeon was Beth A. Schrope, I had an awful experience and had the band removed after less than 6 weeks of having it put in. While her office was nice and she worked out of a good hospital, the 6+ month process before the surgery was sorely lacking in their effort to prepare their patients for what was to come. They sent me to a psychiatrist for "release" and after a 1/2 hour, someone who had never seen me before, said I was fine to have the surgery.  No prep, meds, therapy, support groups or anything to help me deal with the psychological impact that having such a life changing surgery would have on my life.

I left the hospital without a follow up appt at her office and with instructions to start eating yogurt 2 days after surgery.  Needless to say, I couldn't get the yogurt in and immediately starting vomiting.  I called the doctor's office and told them of my reaction and they reacted like it's no big deal. For the next 2 weeks, the only thing I could keep down were medicine cup sized portions of iced tea. I don't know how I had the energy to do anything after 2 weeks pre-surgery liquid diet and 2 weeks post surgery iced tea diet. My only follow up appt at the doc was to tell her to take it out, which she did 2 weeks later.  I felt as if she had inserted a shoe or hair brush in my body...that's how foreign the band felt.  With no post surgery support, I felt like a ship with no port.

Since then, I've gained more weight, despite being off and on weigh****chers, joining the gym and trying trim spa, etc. I've been doing research for a new doctor and have found Dr. Anthony Pucci who works out of Englewood Hospital. His practice is rated a Center for Bariatric Excellence, but then, so was Dr. Shrope's. His office is not as modern and sleek as Dr. Shrope, but at my first consultation, he gave me more info on what to expect for a 2nd try at the band, than Dr. Shrope's did the entire 6 months of my pre-surgery prep.

I tell this story for several reasons...

1. Has anyone used Dr. Anthony Puc****nglewood) for their surgery and what was your experience like?

2. Has anyone had the band put in, taken out and tried a 2nd time?  If so, did it work?  He mentioned possible complications and I'm weighing the risks.

3. Has anyone had their surgery at Englewood Hospital and what was your experience like?

4. Dr. Pucci said that he doesn't require the 2 week pre-surgery liquid diet to "shrink the liver" unless the patient is severely morbidly obese, but my first surgeon did require it (and I was 10lbs lighter than I am now)...is this normal?

I appreciate any feedback that you might have, as I'm really excited to try again and I'm in a much better state of mind after this first consultation. But before I get too invested, I want to be sure that I've selected the right Doc this go around.

Thanks.

Topic: What to expect for my Sleeve surgery this month

Hello my name is Lydia and I am having my surgery on 3/26/14 @ RWJ hospital in New Brunswick.  I am very, very, very nervous about this!  For one, I had the lap band done in 2008 (didn't work for me) and it was removed last month.  I am recovering STILL from it!!! I'm still sore as heck! So, this is part of the reason I'm scared to have the sleeve.  Am I gonna be in pain for weeks? Also, will I lose weight? Will I be sick? I hate the foods that I am required to eat Post Op, will I be able to do it?  I have so many doubts and questions that I'm scared.  SOMEONE WHO'S BEEN IN MY SHOES, PLEASE...PLEASE HELP!

Thanks!

Do you still see Dr. Bilof? I have an appointment to see him about being re-sleeved. How is his staff and his bedside manner?

Hi There!
I too had Dr. JB do my RNY in 11/06. The practice was "taken over" by Dr. Abkin and your records are probably there. Pat Sullivan is the office manager and can probably help you if you want to see Dr. Abkin or a new doctor. Not sure where you live but I am a faciliatator of a peer to peer support group that meets the first Saturday of the month in Scotch Plains. Dr. JB gave us a home in Muhlenberg before they closed and now we meet at RWJ Fitness. Perhaps the group can help you...we are warm and welcoming...and perhaps I have met you before. If you are interested, please email me: [email protected]

Hi everyone...it has been a long time since I have been on these posts...I had gastric bypass with Dr. Jean-Baptiste (may he rest in peace) in 2006.  I had not been back to him in years since he moved from his Plainfield office...my GP monitors my levels...etc....I gained back a lot of weight since I got pregnant in 2010.  I am trying to find a new dr but my question is to those of you who had Dr. JB and now go to another dr...were you able to get your records and if so how did you do it....I haven't found a dr yet but I am sure they would probably like to see the records of my surgery.  Thanks!

Topic: RE: MEDICAID AND MEDICARE SURGEONS LIST!

"dr" ducheine proaby doesnt take it because he was frauding the system! he was probably dropped by horizon nj health! i went to him in 2012 to set up a bariatric date and was told i had to pay 500.00 out of pocket ON TOP OF what my insurance paid in order for him to perform my surgery! in addition to that...he had HORRIBLE bedside manners and was extremely rude to me...EXTREMELY. i left his office almost in tears. GOOD RIDDANCE TO BAD RUBBISH i say!

there ARE a few GREAT doctors in nj that take horizon nj health! dr alves, dr adam goldstein, dr. wasser, dr goldbaum, dr marc neff...i dont have their numbers but google their names and the word bariatric and their numbers come up! i am finding a new doctor now!

Topic: WHERE? post op support groups

I am 6 months post op (gastric sleeve) and desperately need a local support group with fellow wls Jersey residents who would benefit from talking about our journey. I live in Jackson NJ and am having a difficult time finding such a group. Does one exist?! Do we need to start one? Any others interested or can recommend? Thanks so much I look forward to hearing your thoughts and ideas...

Happy healthy~
