Call your surgeon. It might depend on the office. I know that surgeons at Barix will do the consultation as long as you've faxed in your OHIP forms. Stef

If you are considering Barix in Ypsilanti, they have frequent info sessions with a free consultation immediately afterwards. At least, that's the way they did it when I went there last September. Contact them an see...that way you don't have to pay a penny other than your travel expenses to and from! It's a great clinic.

Candace, Some, but certainly not all US surgeons want you have applied to OHIP for your OCC before your initial surgical consult. However, my surgeon, Dr. Marek Lutrzykowski and many other surgeons will let you have an initial surgical consult concurrent or preceding you OHIP OCC submission. Even Dr. O'Malley will accept an appointment for his orientation seminar if you call and say you intend to be a selfpay surgical patient. You can also selfpay for RNY Gastric Bypass or Duodenal Sitch surgery in the US or overseas and then apply to OHIP for reimbursement of the full costs. Others have done it that way and got back every dime. I highly recommend selfpaying for at least the initial surgical consult in order to get a letter from your surgeon to forward to OHIP and your GP that says that you are a suitable candidate for WLS. This is the way I did it. That was a good question that others also want to hear the answer to. Keep posting and good luck with your journey. OMG Prevention magazine is not the best place to get your stats from. They are very "natural" with just about everything.........I have seen this article before and have also seen article that contradict everything it says. We are in control now...............
