Does anyone know why after RNY you can't eat and drink at the same time? My dr told me it is because my stomach will stretch but in the hospital at a class they said the food will leave your stomach too fast?

Hi, The way it was explained to me is that you pouch is full with food and it goes slowly through the stoma. If you drink right after eating you push the food through too fast. It can stretch the pouch and make you hungry faster. It is hard.

Chellsea, Your answer can be found in the "Pouch Rules for Dummies", if you have not read it already get a copy and read it!If you need a copy I can forward you one. To sum it up: A common misunderstanding of gastric bypass surgery is that the pouch causes weight loss because it is so small, the patient eats less. Although that is true for the first six months, that is not how it works. Regardless of the outlet size, liquidity foods empty faster than solid foods. (High calorie liquids will create weight gain.) Stay full by slowing the emptying of the pouch. (Eat solids. No liquids 15 minutes before and none until 1 ½ hours after the meal). A scientific test showed that a meal of egg/toast/milk had almost all emptied out of the pouch after 45 minutes. Without milk, just egg and toast, more than ½ of the meal still remained in the pouch after 1 ½ hours. Bottom line is, if you eat and drink together foods do not stay in your pouch and you will become hungrier faster. Which means you will eat more during the day adding unecessary fat, carbs & calories. ~Kristin
