Dear Jeff,
Wishing you all the best and much success. Being scared is only natural.
Have faith! You are in very good hands with Dr. Bertha. My husband Phil and I are WLS patients of his partner Dr. Abkin. We feel that they are very knowledgeable, skilled, kind, and the TOPS in their field.
Just follow all of thier instructions and I am sure you will do fine!
Best of luck to you as you begin you new life!
Take care,
Sherri
Hi Jeff - You wouldn't be normal if you liked pain!! LOL!!
While with any surgrey, there is pain involved - it is not long lasting, and believe it or not, you do forget about it. - Besides - that's why GOD invented pain meds!!! Don't be afraid to ask the nurse for them as soon as you are due to get the next one. If you wait until it starts to hurt - it will be harder to control it. Besides - right after surgery, you should get the "magic morphine" pump!! Don't be afraid to PUSH THAT BUTTON!! They have ways to help you manage the pain - so don't let this issue freak you out!
Is your surgery LAP or Open? Ours was LAP, with 5 little holes - just amazing! Once you are up and walking - do this as soon as possible, and as often as possible after surgery - you will begin to feel much better! Walking and sips of water are very important right after surgery. Once I was home - the only discomfort I had was getting in and out of bed ( ours is extra high) It was more of a pulling than a stabbing pain on my left, where the stapler goes in. But again - each day after surgery gets better and better. I am sure you will do just fine!
I've had 2 c-sections an a hysterectomy - this was soooo much easier than those!
Remember - anything good is worth suffering a little for.
Think positive thoughts - you will have much success!
Take care, and keep seeking support on this site - it really does help to know you are not alone!

Hi Jeff - yes I kind of had to "roll / slide" in and out of bed, and Phil had to help me out the first few times, until I got the hang of getting in and out the least painful way. It was like a pulling streatching pain, mostly on the left side, that I had to figure a way around. Maybe you could practice before, or see if there is some kind of step stool ( make sure it's a safe one - you don't want to fall!) you could practice with before?
Just an idea!
Glad I could make you feel better - oh - we are east of you - in the Glen Rock/Hawthorne/Ridgewood area. How do you like this wind we are having??? It's wild here!
Take care,
Sherri
