How long after surgery did you go back to work. I'm planning out surgery in my head and this was one thing that I'm really not sure about. I probably wouldn't be able to take months off. I'm curious as to others experience getting back to work. I work in an office, so no lifting....just alot of sitting and typing.

I am answering because not many are responding here in NJ... I do not want to raise your hopes up should your individual situation be different... but I do not want you to think that it will definitely take months either... Assuming you are doing a laparoscopic surgery, they recommend two weeks... However, I was told that someone had the surgery Thursday and returned to work as a correction officer the next Monday. Hope this helps... and good luck onyour surgery... Neil www.gastricbypasstips.com

That helps. Thanks Neil. That makes fitting it into life much more doable (hopefully). I don't know why I thought you would need to be out so long. I can probably take 2 weeks and not jeopardize my job.

Hi Rachel, I too work in an office and took only 2 weeks off after my LAP RNY surgery. If I had it to do over again - I would have taken 3 weeks. I ended up only working until @ 2-3pm each day the 1st week I was back, and then went home and slept a few hours while my wonderful hubby did just about everything around the house. I was just exhausted. For me - 2 weeks was pushing it - I should have given myself 3 I think, but my boss was away overseas, and I thought 2 would be all I needed. This said - everyone is different - your experience might be different. Once I got through week 3 part time - week 4 was much better, and continued to be after that. I have now lost 102 lbs to date, and feel better than I have in my whole life. I'm still waiting for my brain and eyes to catch up to my weight loss. I hold up a pair of size 12 pants and say to myself, as I check and double check the size tag..."Are these really my pants?"!!! Best of luck too you - I can just suggest you listen to your body and get the rest you need when you are home. Take care, Sherri

Everyone is different... and it depends on the procedure also you have done...If you have is open it takes longer to heal than laproscopically.. I had it done lap but I took 6 weeks the max disability would allow.. I may not have needed the entire six weeks but when I went back to work I was ready to work full time... It is best to listen to your doctor and your body...

Thanks all. If I do decide to start this process, I don't want to be out of work too long. I'll keep you posted on everything. I'm going to research my insurance this week.

Like has been said, everyone is different. I work in NYC and had the surgery on a wednesday, and was back at work on the following monday. I work with computers at my desk though. Was I tired? Yep..but it only lasted a day or so more. I heal fast too.. so your milage might vary.

I work in an office, too. I'm going back on my fifth week only because I don't think I could stay home for 6...I'm getting bored. BUT, I know I couldn't have gone back on my 2nd week. I was still pretty groggy from all the drugs and getting used to everything. My body needed as much rest as I could give it. As said by others, it's an individual thing and only you are going to know if you're ready to go back.
