How is United Health Care, POS in NJ as far as approvals go?

Hi! I have the option of switching to United Health Care POS in January. I have heard that United is pretty good with approvals but is the approval process much different from the POS service vs. PPO, etc? Any help would be appreciated. I SO do not want to get my hopes up! Thanks!

Hi Jersey, Since you don't have any info in your profile.. I would ask Abkins office which one is easier to pass. They'll tell you.. DJ

Hey Jersey -- don't know the answer to your specific questions, but I used to be a benefits administrator, and a PPO was always easier to deal with than a PPO. POS' require referrals, while PPOs don't is only one reason. Good luck.

Hi, I have UHC POS plan, but my employer is self-insured which means they have the ultimate say in what will be covered and what will not. I had my first consult with the surgeon on 4/1/05 and was approved by UHC (my primary insurance) by 4/14/05. My secondary, Horizon followed suite on 5/5/05, after I had a psych eval. All in all, I have to say my experience with UHC was a good one and I was pleasantly surprised how easy and uneventful it was to obtain approval. Good Luck, I hope the process for you is as smooth and easy as it was for me!!

I almost forgot, I would stick with the POS (point of service) plan because it should have out-of-network benefits available to you. Many of the surgeons performing these procedures don't participate with insurance plans, so the out-of-network benefits could come in handy.
