Question about insurance re: "self-funded" United Health Care
I have my consult a week tomorrow (VERY excited!!)
I called United Health Care and they were very excited to tell me that my particular plan ("self-funded") did not cover WLS. She said that these types of plans do not need to be in compliance with state mandates.
I think I have United Health Care PPO, and today, I saw someone else on a board that had the same insurance!?
I am originally from Canada, i've been here for 7 years and still don't get the system. Please, if anyone knows anything about this, I would appreciate your help.
Thanks!
Christina
Basically they are telling you that you EMPLOYER is self funding the insurance plan and it's only being "managed" by United Health Care. My husband works for a large company that also self insures. You can try contacting your employers' human resources dept. to check your coverage. If they confirm that you do NOT have coverage, you will pretty much either have to try to fight your employer or try to purchase additional insurance, or self pay your surgery.
The "state mandate" that some have posted about only applies to NJ HMOs (those are health maintenance organizations) but do NOT include National HMOs, PPOs, self-insurers, etc.
