advice regarding lap band in New Jersey - New to forum [Edit Post]
posted 5 minutes ago
I am considering the Lap Band surgery..I am looking for others who have had it done in New Jersey preferrably the Ocean County area.  Monmouth County is fine as well.  I am attending a seminar tonight regarding this procedure.  I would like to know your  experience, if anyone can also refer me to a physician in this area. I have been on the roller coaster to long and can't wait to get off..I would like to know if others are happy with the outcome.  Please someone get back to me a.s.a.p

I live in Monmouth County but traveled to Livingston to see Dr Andrei.  He is a well known bariatric surgeon.  Now...my band slipped unfortunately so it was not succesful for me.  I am going back to Dr Andrei to have the RNY.  I wish I had done that surgery first but I also wish the lapband had been succesful for me.  If I can answer any other questions..please feel free to ask

I am sorry to hear about your issue with the lap band...does the slippage happen often and is it dangerous?  I assume it could be corrected? also how long did u have it  before it slipped? I am concerned about this surgery yet I am trying to remain optomistic...I am going for my consultation on 4/5 and I attended my first seminar last night which I was very impressed.

I also had my surgery lap band with Dr Andrei and my band slipped also and had it repaired by him. I was traveling from Trenton to see him every six weeks, it got to be so stressful ( the travel end of it ) I found another doctor closer to home. Dr Noyan who also has a practice in Monmouth & Mercer County.  My surgery will be 3yrs this May and I still need to lose 20 more lbs.  I made a lot of friends up northwhen going for my fills and a least half have had band slipping problems also. Good Luck with your new surgery.

So you had the lapband repair and it sounds like it was succesful!  Thats really cool.  He didnt want to do a repair and felt it wouldnt be successful with me.  I really dont know why.  I think Dr Andrei is a very skilled surgeon but isnt much of a talker in the explaining sense.  Anyhow..being that I wasnt succesful with the band (had it in for a year and didnt lose much weight)..except for when I started taking phentermine and did Jenny Craig on top of having the band which was ridiculous.  So I am looking forward to the RNY...I feel it will be a better surgery for me personally.  I hear ya with the stress of traveling.  It is a pain in the butt to go for fills and have to get up at 5am to do so.  I will not miss that part.  My best friend had the RNY with Dr Andrei and it has been very succesful and her friend  had the band done with him also...who is struggling with regaining the weight.  So.... congrats on doing so well with yours!!

I have also heard that Dr Johnson who is affiliated with Bayshore Hosp in Holmdel is good but I dont know anyone personally who has had the surgery with him.   My primary physician told me that alot of his patients have gone to him for the surgery.  I called to get an apointment to see him and the receptionist was rude and had attitude.  That is an immediate no go for me..I dont care how good the surgeon is...if his peeps are rude...Im not going there.  So I decided to stay with Dr Andrei...at least I know he is a skilled surgeon and Shannon (the woman who handles the insurance is great and his people are friendly and try to be helpful).  I am in the healthcare field and there is never an excuse for people to be rude/nasty in this field.

If you are thinking of the band, be careful.  As you can see from some of these posts there are many complications with them. Not only are there slippages but there are many band errosions and this causes severe damage to the stomach and sometimes to the esophagus as well.  Many people also suffer from severe reflux afterwards and you don't lose nearly as much weight as you would with RNY or DS.  If you are diabetic, the RNY or DS are a better option too. RNY is the best option for reflux - most are reflux free afterwards.

I would suggest that you find a surgeon that does all 4 surgeries and you can get all the information you can to make the best decision.  You can also get information on these boards as well.

You can also try Dr Morris Washington in Freehold and Holmdel.  I have the Realize band and it does take a lot of work..the right amount of fills and the right foods.  But, if you research the band vs RNY, in the long run the band works better.  It does get depressing when you here someone with the RNY saying they've lost 60 pounds and you with the banding have only lost 10.  Sometimes I wonder if I made the wrong decision but quite frankly the thought of rearranging my stomach and intestines really scares me.  My friend is just got approval from the insurance company and he is having the RNY because he was too large for the band.  Good luck on your journey.  Emily and Jessica at Dr. Washington's office are great!

I appreciate all your input. I am new to researching the lap band. I am looking into a less invasive procedure. I am not looking for a miracle.  I have tried every single diet there is and I have lost and gained always. I am tired of struggling. I would like to know the difference between the realize band and the regular lap band..if anyone has that info.  I have found surgeons about 25 minutes away which would benefit me.  Does anyone have any good advise regarding the lap band?
