Hi there everyone

Continued good luck and success to all of us on this journe/process. I had my gastric bypass surgery on 3/10/10 No complications. I started the process at 278 am now at 267. I have some pain, nothing too alien, that is, I have had 2 c sections before. My issue is, a bit more emotional

I am not sure, but I feel this incredible sadness. I am not sure why? Any input?

While I did not personally experience this I have heard it is totally normal to be an emotional rollarcoaster.  I know my hormones were way out of wack immediately post op.

Sometimes after an operation patients have known to go through stages similar to those stages of grief.

A lot of it is hormonal. Another component psychological - the fear of not being able to do what is needed in order to be successful.

Know it will (should) pass. If this feeling last a few weeks, you may want to check with your Doctor and/or contact the person who did your Psych evaluation.

Good Luck on your Journey !!

Hi, been there. I'm almost 2 years post-op and doing very well. Just afer my surgery I went into some wacko funk, anxious and miserable. My previous general anesthesias were with c-sections and hormones play such a huge role there. So why the roller coaster of emotions now.

A friend who is social worker and did her master's work with bariatric patients made a diagnosis. She said (and an MD concurred) that I was mourning food loss. I went on Effexor and also took small amounts of xanax until the Effexor was at therapeutic levels. I'm still on it.

While your emotional status may be much different than mine, please have someone to talk to, it helps. Talk to someone in your surgeon's office, also. They should be aware of ANYTHING going on with you and it must be noted on your chart.

I wish you luck and good health, physical and emotional.

thank you all for all your considerate and kind replies. I think you are all correct, especially regarding grief stages and food loss. Its so strange how food is more than just a tangible element, rather an emotional one. I spoke to a friend who also had bariatric surgery, whose observation of my situation, made it akin to, that of a break up. It does feel like a break up from a bad relationship. Reminds me of the book , I hate you, Don't leave me."

I find myself having the strangest dreams, and i think about the different foods I miss. I feel ashamed for allowing food to be so meaningful.
