Welcome to our little page on the big vast Internet. Yep this is a nice group. I have found this whole site to be so helpful and supportive. Welcome. As for advice, its normal to be nervous and have doubts, both before and after. It will hurt after surgery for a while, a few weeks but I found that each day got just a little better. I would say the 1st month is the hardest. Learning new life style charges, adjusting to the discomfort...but it is all so worth it. To take to the hospital, lose fitting clothing that is easy to get on and off, perhaps a lose fitting sun dress or some PJ's. Camera for before and after shots (will be needed and U will want later down the road, trust me), bring a soft small pillow to hug to your self to cough etc, it helps the pain. U may experience some constipation. Normal from the Anastasia. I used some milk of magnisa (given to me in the hospital) and it worked fine. U may also notice that the 1st time or so that U Pee its a brown colour, this is because the pee is so concentrated due to surgery and not eating. U will be expected to get up and walk the day after surgery. U may also have some fancy leggings on that will inflate on and off, placed on your calves. This is to prevent blood clots and is normal. U may also feel a bit nauseas from the Anastasia also normal. U will find your mid section bolted and sore, also normal and will go away over time. As for eating, to start you will most likely be asked to sip some kind of water, it took me hours to get down just 1 ounce. Not to worry also normal. U have been told, I am sure, to drink at least 64 oz of water and get in at least 70 grams of protein a day. Its a tall order and in the beginning this will not happen as your still swollen inside. SIP SIP SIP! Can't say it enough. Take 1 sip every 5 minutes or so. It is almost impossible to meet the protein and water requirement at first. I still use protein shakes 8 months out of surgery and most likely will the rest of my life. I have tried several flavors and I like the vanilla, chocolate and strawberry the best. There is a lot U can do with the vanilla. I have mixed it with all kinds of sugar free juice and crystal lite. Further out I mixed it with no fat milk, which help to your calcium in. Don't be afraid to experiment with flavors and recipes. I have a ton saved on my PC if you need any. There is the Hungry Girl cookbook I saw for sale in Bed Bath and Beyond here in my city. Good web site also. Also check Amazon and the web site (HungreyGirl.com) as well as Ebay. If you can have someone to help U the 1st week or two that is great. If nit get some cheep long handled tongs to use as a T.P. reacher and extender. Also some soft baby like wipes work well. If U can't get help after the surgery, see if U can get a visiting Nurse or something from your insurance. I had one the 1st week. I also had to give myself heparin shots the 1st week or so. To prevent blood clots. TIP: to prevent bruising, rub the injection site (I used my thighs) with a ice cube for 15 seconds or so, it will help numb the skin and will cause the blood vessels to constrict and lessen if not prevent the bruising (at least this worked in my case). U will find your biggest weight loss will occur around this time. You will learn so much about yourself during this time. Including just how much head hunger your really had, LOL, wink. Feel free to stop by anytime. Good luck on your journey. Michelle

THANK YOU AGAIN SO MUCH FOR EVERYTHING!!!
Welcome and good luck on your journey. I see you are a patient of Dr. Dobruskin. She works with my surgeon, Dr. Washington. I have seen her twice for my follow-up and like her very much.
I had RNY in March. My only suggestion to you would be to stay off the scale once you have been banded. I used to weigh myself daily and was getting very frustrated. I now weigh myself only once a month (or on a doctor's scale if I have an appt. in between) and I am happier that way.

Good luck on your surgery Layna. I also had a lapband with Dr. Dubruskin on Dec. 15th. I am very happy with her. Keep the information you received from the dietician handy. Follow the rules. Also, bring chapstick with you to the hospital. Your lips will be very dry. Also have a pillow in the car with you on the ride home. I needed it to hug to soften the bumps in the road. Which hospital are you having the surgery at? If I could help you any further I would be more than happy to. Send me your phone number and I could call you to try to answer any questions. Laurel
