I had my surgery on March 2. Within the first week and a half, I lost 20lbs and I was thrilled. Well it's almost 3 weeks now, and guess what? I haven't lost a thing. Nada. I fact, this morning the scale said I GAINED 2 lbs! I am eating exactly what I'm supposed to, I'm not consuming more than 500-600 calories a day, which is where my nutritionist wants me at this point. I am getting so frustrated and depressed! What the hell am I doing wrong!?

Relax,  this is normal and you are doing nothing wrong.  JUst continue with you doctor's and nutritionist's guidelines and weight come off.  Everyone goes through this mini-stall, it's just our bodies rebeling.

Oh really? I thought I was going crazy and that I was a failure already! Thanks so much...I'll stick with it and pray the scale starts moving!

Shannon try not to get discouraged.  As your body adjusts to the few calories it tries to hold on to them.  I didn't lose much weight the first month or two.  Once you start getting fills and eating good solid protein the weight will fall off!  I had a rough time myself, buyers remorse I guess, but it does get better.

Hang in there!

Thanks Michelle! I guess I'm just disappointed thinking once I had my surgery, it would just fall right off. Plus the fact that I'm only eating 600 calories a day, (good calories), I keep thinking jeez, this is only a quarter of what I was probably eating before, so how come nothing's happening! lol

I had the same problem.  I stopped drinking myoplex and started loosing again.  I think it was making me retain fluid.  You could try changing one thing at a time and see if anything is having the same effect on you.
Good Luck,

I had my surgery a week after you.  I lost the 14 pounds I gained in the hospital plus 7 more.  Then I gained back 3.  How in the heck did this happen.  I exercise every day for an hour (treadmill and recumbent stepper).  I am having only protein shakes and non fat Greek yogurt.  What gives?

Starting Weight:  282 lbs.
Day of surgery:  224 lbs
Current weight: 116.0 lbs
Goal weight:  135 lbs.

I wish I had bookmarked the post so I could refer to it now.  A couple of people on the main board posted with this problem and someone else posted that it's normal to have a big loss right in the beginning followed by a great big stall or even a gain.  You guys are not doing anything wrong.  Your bodies got rid of a lot of water and surgery fluid at first and now is adjusting to the new way things are.  The weight will start rolling off soon, please hang in and don't beat yourselves up.  I wish I'd bookmarked it so that I could read it and reasurre myself when it happens to me after my surgery.  Hang in there!  :)

Shannon,

With that said:

Make sure you are getting your 60 to 80 grams of protein. THIS IS IMPORTANT TO WEIGHT LOSS.Make sure it's good protein. Now don’t get me wrong - I don’t want you to eat a bag of chips, or whole cake or drink tons of ice cream shakes in order to get protein in.  You need to use some common sense :) !!

When I first had the operation I had the same concerns as you. A close friend, who is a Certified Fitness Trainer, gave me a valuable lesson concerning loosing weight. He gave me some information I found interesting, and thought I’d pass it along. The first thing he said is “You have to EAT in order to loose weight". I know, it sounds strange. He further explained, this does not mean to OVEREAT, but eat sensible portions. That means eat until you feel full (not stuffed).

He explained the body is a marvelous machine, and it will protect it self. If one doesn’t eat enough, the body’s metabolism will slow down - in order to keep it self functioning. If a person intake is less then what it expels, the body will start to “store" food. If a person stay on this type of eating regiment over a prolonged period, the body starts to “eat it self" - which is extremely unhealthy and could be fatal.

According to my friend, the first thing the body will first start to “eat away" at is all the stored sugars in the body. After that has been depleted, the body then attacks all the (both good and bad) carbohydrates and fats. Finally the body starts to “digest" the proteins in the body. The proteins are mostly stored in muscle. One of the most important muscles our body has is the HEART. That’s why many anorexia patients die of heart problems - basically the body ate it away.

He said don’t worry if you’re loosing right away. He said as long as we follow the guidelines our Doctors/Nutritionist has set for us, we will loose weight. The body sometimes takes a while before it “resets" itself.

Good Luck on your Journey !!

Tom
