Back to work

Good morning & happy Friday to all....Monday started my 1st day back to work since my surgery (10/28/08), I feel good, but I will honestly say I seem like I am falling short somewhere.
I work in an office and I have always brought my breakfast & lunch with me.  I have cereal and or oatmeal for breakfast, and for lunch it seems to be the worst.  Part of me still doesn't get the hang of the food intake.  I never know if I am getting enough or what.

Where does protein shakes/powders come in?  Can they be used in place of a meal?  I went out to the Vitamin Shoppe this past weekend & purchased a protein powder called Designer Whey.  I was so lost in the store I had no idea what to get.  I spoke with one of the employees there, explained my situation and he said that I what I picked was what most doctors recommend.  I tried it once this week in place of dinner (thats just the problem) but when I woke up the next morning, I was hungry.

I feel as if I should be home trying to get my meal plan in order before anything.

Thanks again for reading.....

I'm in the same boat as you are.  I had my surgery on 10/20/2008 and been at work for about 3 weeks.  Its been hard to plan for breakfast and lunch.  I am not having an easy time with protein drinks and sometimes I dont meet my protein requirements.  I actually sent an email to my nutritionist asking for help/suggestions.  Once she gets back to me, I will share the info with you and hopefully it helps.

Can I ask what you are eating for breakfast & lunch?
I know peanut butter has protein, so lately I have been eating that on some multigrain crackers.

the last few days I have been eating chicken noodle soup.

Are you guys using a food log? it s easier to see where ur falling short if. Umm the other thing is what did ur nut tell u in the nutrition class u had. Did they give you sample menus, and what are good choices for food and protien?

the designer whey you bought is ok . I like it. What flavor did you get.?

You mentioned oatmeal for bf, there is a way to mix protien in ur oatmeal and make it more nutritious(sp)

Optimum Nutrition makes a protein drink called ANY WHEY. It doesn't have a flavor so can mix it with just about anything to get ur additional protein. Kinda LIke Tofu.

If you dont mind me asking do u have protein goals and stuff like that?

Hi Tom,
I will say no one has ever mentioned a food log to ever, is that something you do on your own?
I have yet to see a nutritionist since the surgery.  I don't go back to see the dr until Jan. 5th.
I have no idea when I am go even go see the nutritionist.

The designer whey that I bought was chocolate.  I was hoping to be able to get a smaller or sample sizes in this but they don't carry it.  What if I don't like it.  They said, just bring it back.
What do I need to do to make my meals more nutritious.  I will do whatever it takes.  If I have to put some powder in something, thats fine.

I don't mind the questions, if it gets me the answers that I need then I am set.  No goals of the sort have been set at all.

Since the surgery I have been to the dr 2 times.  the first time was 2 weeks after the surgery.  The second time was 3 weeks after that which was a day short of 5 weeks after the surgery for me.

Thanks for your help.

I didn't eat oatmeal for a while, because I wanted to save all my room for denser protein. But when I did add it in, I made it with skim plus instead of water. That gives it a protein boost. I measure out a cup of milk, drink 1/3, and add the 2/3 to a packet of instant oatmeal.

Good luck!

My lawyers told me I have to add this disclaimer.

I don't know everything about wls nutrion or support, so with that let me say.

Yes I was given food logs by the nut at Barix, where I am having my surgery. I was given what is termed the Barix Bible.

It is a plethera of info for nutrition thru all stages of  wls recovery.

here are a copule of  website for you to explore.

barixclinics.com  go to pt's social website. they have all kinds of tips and tricks for getting ur daily nutrition. and a good social forums for support.

Vitalady.com has sample packets of protein and things you can try intead of buying it in bulk and not liking it.

bariatriceating.com (SP) is another good site for recipes and such.

netrition.com is another for buying protein and supplements

ebay is good if you know what ur looking at.

Please let us know what ur other concerns are and then maybe we get u the answers u need to make this a complete sucess.

Good luck

I was thinking. If you have a local health food store, go there ask them questions. they should have individual servings of protein shakes and powders cheaper than buying in bulk also

Hi

Going back to work was a bit scary & hard - you were no longer in the safety of your own home!

When I went back, I steamed alot of chicken so I could just heat & eat at work.  I also used alot of canned tuna in water or shrimp.  All are good sources of protein without large amounts of fat & calories.  For breakfast, I mostly stuck with oatmeal but always added unflavored protein powder to make it worthwhile eating.

Every doctor has their own ideas for what you need in protein - you may need to double check with yours.  In the very beginning I was using 3 protein shakes a day but cut back to 2 once I started eating the right amount of protein regularly.

Your best bet as someone mentioned is to use a food journal.  There are a few good ones online that help you out.   The one I use is FitDay.com.  Keep track of everything you eat & drink in a day then you can see exactly where you need to do better.  It is an eye opener when you first start back in some ways - I was amazed at all the hiding places to find carbs!!!

Good Luck - if you have any other questions, let us know.  It always helps to hear what others experienced - just remember we are all different and what works for one may not work for another.

Don't be afraid to have foods at any time of the day.  If I know I am having a difficult day, on the move, at a conference where I will eat more carbs later  I have tuna for breakfast.  sometimes meatballs for breakfast . Don't forget greek yogurt like fage.  It can be mixed with fruit and splenda  and is tons of protien
