Hypoglycemia and gastric bypass....

Well a little over a week ago, i went to a halloween party.  I had two beers within a 3 1/2 hour period.  Everything was great until i started shaking.  I lost the feeling in my legs, and fell down a flight of stairs. I later found out that i had a hypoglycemic seizure.  Can you say scary?  I have never experienced anything so scary in my life.  I am going to see a neurologist and get some tests done at the end of the month.  As far as the hypoglycemia, i thought i had it under control. I was doing so good until this point.  I do have to say i am doing what my doctor told me to and i am upping my carbs even more.. which im not happy about, carrying little chocolates if needed and i am carrying an emergency glucomen shot.  As soon as i get a free time i do plan on calling the nutritionist at my surgeons office to find out what foods would be best for me to start eating.. and also taking any suggestions any of you may have.  Has anyone had this happen to them before?  You know as bad as an experience i have had and i am now dealing with... i am still glad i had the surgery.. sounds crazy but... its the way i feel.

Christine,
So sorry to hear about your health problems...that really stinks!
Did you have the hypoglycemia before surgery?  Or is this a new ailment?
As far as the beers go...and this is a woman who LOVED her beer, you should really stay away from that!  I'm not saying don't drink...I'll be the first one to admit to a ****tail or 2 every now and again...but the carbonation in the beer is really bad for us... try something that's not so carbonated.

Best of luck

hey christine

sorry about your hypoglycemic problems and hope you are healing from your fall.

from reading on the grads board it seems that this can be a problem after weight loss, but i also think it can be controlled fairly easily.  prob just more eating rules to follow, oh joy!!

see what your doc says and good luck with your upcoming tests.

im also thinking beer is not your best choice, not only the carbonation, but beer is almost like a food to our systems because of the carbs which turn to sugars.  i agree with the other poster, maybe another type of drink might be wiser, but i miss a nice cold one every now and then myself

honey, feel better soon, post us with some good news soon!!!!

be safe and well, jacki

I also have problems with low blood sugars if I don't eat every 3-4 hours, especially in the afternoon.  Make sure you get in those protein shakes, one in the am snack and one for the pm snack.  Eat protein first, veggie/fruit second, carbs last if at all; you know the diet.  String cheese makes a great snack.

Actually what you are experiencing is Reactive Hypoglycemia which I also have. It is part of the dumping syndrome and it has been rather hit or miss with me. Sometimes it happens and sometimes it does. When it does it drops suddenly and I have been jittery or more serious blurry vision. I couldn't eat enough to get my sugar up quickly when it was at 59 due to the fact that I was full so quickly. I do carry glucose tablets.

Increasing your carbs actually can cause your hypoglycemia because it is reactive. You eat a carb and your sugar drops. I was told to drink skim milk rather than juice because of the protein in milk that will help keep the sugar up. If you haven't seen a endocrinologist that is the person to see about it.

Hi, I think the response you received from Nancy.. hit it head on...
Also be very careful with alcohol... your system doesn't metabolize it the way it used and it leads to dumping like your experience.. I am not saying don't drink.. I think we all do occasionally.. but limit yourself to one.. and that is it.. sometimes just one send me reeling..
Just be very very carefulll. I really think the alcohol and the carbs are the cause of your experience and Nancy saying the reactive Hypoglycemia  because rememeber beer is made from grain and alcohol. both carbs...
Good luck and stay safe..

Nancy and DJ are right.  The beer probably spiked your blood sugar and then you crashed.  Although a doctor should advise you, keeping yourself on a sugar high is probably not the answer.

You need less carbs. If I have too much bread, I get disorientated...because I crash. So the answer is no carbs for me....or carbs all the time to sustain.  In the end, I chose no carb....because I don't want to gain.

IMO chocolate in your pocket is not the answer.  String cheese is the answer..natural peanut butter, peanuts, etc.
