Did anyone hide their WLS from family/friends?

I did not "hide" my surgery from anyone.  As far as I am concerned, my surgery was none of their business.  I did not tell anyone other than my immediate family and they know I am a private person.  Remember people judge others for all different reasons, whether it be right or wrong for them to do so.  I can only control my reaction to their action and my medical procedure is no one else's business.  I do attend support groups regularly and freely share within our group and sometimes on the boards.  I have lost over 120lbs over the past two years and to tell you the truth, most people do not comment on my weight loss, nor did they comment on my weight gain in previous years.  My husband and kids, Mom, brother and sister are very supportive and always have been.  No one else really matters to me.

Hi

I have loss between 10-15lbs (depend on which doctor office weight me) and some of my heavier co-workers have made negative comments I was really surprise I have never judge any of them for not losing weight, but the HELL with them just like you said they really do not matter to me anyway.Several months ago I did give this website to one of my co-worker only because losing weight is want we always talk about, but the difference is I did something about it.

I had my surgery with Dr. Abkin. But Dr. Bertha was on call after my surgery and I have to say....he is amazing. I was very sick after surgery and he helped me alot during that time.

Now...I did not tell a lot of people, my mom included until about 2 weeks before. I was afraid that she would not be supportive...my mistake because she was...to my surprise. I did not tell my husbands dad and step mother only because they really wouldnt care and I an not in the mood for their crap. I did tell his sister and mother...which I only half regret because they were just too much into giving me medical advice...mind you neither one had a medical degree.

My husband supported me from before day one...sometimes even when I didnt support myself.

My friends were split......I had a friend who said that another friend who had surgery had taken the easy way out. After I heard that, I was afraid to tell anyone. I took a chance and told another friend who was so happy for me that it gave her the courage to have the surgery herself. Her surgery is tomorrow. I have told a few more people, family and friends...98% are supportive. It is just personal choice...if they are negative, then keep it to yourself. You do not need negative people around you before or after surgery. I have found out that the negative people are usually the people who either do not understand the surgery or they are jealous...and you will find that once you have the surgery.....they become even more jealous.

Its not that I didn't want to tell anyone...I personally don't feel that it is anyones business.  My immediate family knows and a select few of my friends.  Everyone has been supportative, I have talked to someone at my job who had it done 5 years ago.  I will say that part of me wishes I didn't talk to her at all.  She did everything in her power to scare me.  She is completely against it.  Told me that I am too young to make the decision, I am not ready.  I have not spoken to her in weeks, I don't plan to say anything.     I also decided not to say anything because I am a quiet shy person who doesn't like being the center of attention or in the spotlight.  I don't want a big deal made.  Maybe thats just me...I am doing this for all the right reasons.  When I come back to work, when I see people and they want to know what I did...I will cross that bridge when I get to it.

It is exactly one week till my date.....I am a basket of nerves.

Good luck!

Hi

You know when I'm in the plus sizes stores I do tell people and I can''t believe the number of people who want the surgery, but they do not have insurance and can't afford to pay for it themselves or their insurance won't cover it .Now days I'm in the plus sizes stores just looking because it's just habit.
