Newbie...lots of questions! First appt tomorrow.
Hi all, my name is Shannon and I'm 40, I'm from Toms River and I'm a married mom of 2 little ones. I just turned 40 two weeks ago I made a promise to myself that I would seek WLS if I couldn't lose weight and keep it off. I am morbidly obese, (ewww I hate even typing that, but truth hurts), with a BMI of....oh hell, it's off the charts, lol. Needless to say, I have my first appointment with the bariatric surgeon tomorrow!
I am seeing Dr. Robert Brolin, as he did my mothers WLS/gastric bypass, back in 2002, and I like him alot. I have spoken to the patient coordinator at the office and she's awesome and very knowledgeable. The only requirement my insurance company has is that I have a supevised diet with a nutritionist for 3 months. Dr. Brolins office will be coordinating that. So here are some of my questions....
I have read on this board that people are going for Psych evaluations. Why?
****adding to that I have been on paxil for 5 years for anxiety and depression. will that be a problem?
What are the required tests pre-surgery?
Is there anything you would recommend I ask the surgeon?
I know I can, and will ask the doctor tomorrow, but I wanted some advice from those that have been through it.
Thanks in advance!
A psych eval was part of my surgeons requirements..... to make sure I was aware of what losing weight would and WOULDN'T do for me....and to gauge my compliance level with the follow up care needed.
I had to have an EKG, an echocardiogram, a sleep study, pulmonary function tests, and a ton of bloods drawn. Every Doc has different requirements.... I was unhealthy going in, so he was very cautious.
What should you ask the surgeon? What type of surgery does he recommend for you.... right now there's 4 main types, lapband, gastric bypass, sleeve gastrectomy, and duodenal switch. How many does he do? Does he keep statistics on weight lost at 3 years or 5 years out? Does his practice offer support groups? Nutritional counseling..... is it included.... what charges are extra? What insurances does he participate with? How long does he follow up with your care? If it's a lapband, how long is the wait for a fill appointment? (Some offices folks here complain about have a 2 month wait!)...
Good luck with your research.... you'll read this a million times on OH, but "think twice, cut only once!".
