I did not have the band but I did research it and that sounds VERY STRANGE to me.

As you said, why get the band if you loosen it to go on vacation - a time where everybody tends to over eat!

As for the pregnancy and keeping the band - that sounds scary.  Will your sister in law and the baby be able to get the right amount of vitamins etc?  I hope she gets a second opinion!!

Good Luck

I am not shocked by the "vacation and opening the band" statement.  I remember, almost 3 years ago, when my husband and I went to our first seminar about bypass and banding.  I had no interest in the band, but my husband was listening.... the doctor said a good thing about the band was that when you went on vacation they could make it so that you were able to eat a little more for a week or so, and then go back to the office after you get home and they would restrict it again.   He liked that option for me, the surgery was for me, because we like to cruise a few times a year-and what is a cruise without food?  Well... I can tell you now, I have been on TWO since my surgery.. a cruise without food is PERFECT.... I'd rather be a size 4 on the cruise, than be a size 24 and eating everything that's not nailed down!  Hands down, no problem making that decision.
