Protein shake suggestions????

Hi everyone!  I'm back and I'm finally doing a little better.  Last night I had my first cottage cheese after my liquid diet.  It felt sooooo good.  I thought I was going to go crazy being on straight clear liquids for a week.  My dr. didn't even introduce protein shakes until now!  So I am now officially in the next phase for another week or two and I'm sure I'll be pretty darn sick of it by then too! lol

Well, since I am about to start my protein shakes I was hoping to get some input from you guys on some of the better ones.  I am a bit of a baby with having to drink something that doesn't taste good....so I would really appreciate it if you could all help me with some suggestions on the types of shakes you did, maybe how you prepared them, etc....

Any help would be greatly appreciated!!!!

Thanks
-Danielle

Glad to hear you are doing better. I started out with the powder shakes added to juice or water, then I switched to Profect protein beverage. Profect has 25 grams of Protein, 0 fat, 0carbs and I ordered it on line at www.barixclinic.com they are cheaper on Barixclinic than Profect web site. Profect comes in many flavors, I refrigerate them and drink 1 in AM & 1 in PM. they run about $56.00 for 24. A bit expensive but I figure I don't have to mix them in Juice. I like the Fuzzy Peach Nector, and a few other flavors. You need the protein, as this will help with hair loss after surgery. Barixclinic will have other protein drinks, powders, bars. Good Luck

Hi Danielle,

Happy to hear you are doing okay.  I tried all kinds of protien shakes in the beginning, the one that I liked the best was 50 Gram Slam, it comes in cans already mixed.  You can get at GNC stores.  They have several different flavors.  You can see by the name 50 Grams of protien in each can.  I don't know if you will like it, but it was okay for me.  The price is expensive $3.50 a can.  You only have to drink about a can a day besides whatever protien you get from your food.  So I would say it would cost $40.00 a month.  There is one other Protien shake, but I didn't like it, but you can try it if you want to, Cosco sells it It is Whey Protien.  The bag is really big it could last you months, and one bag is only $26.00.  It comes in chocolate or vanilla.  I bought the chocolate, and mixed it with skim milk.  I think you can mix it with other things if you like.  It was okay until I found the 50 Gram Slam.   Let me know if my suggestions helped you.  Good-Luck!!!

Honestly i don't like any of the ones I have tried. I find them tolerable if I blend them in the blender and drink them very cold.  I do better with clear lighter flavors.  I bought Syntax Nectar lemon iced tea flavor.  It tastes like a cheap iced tea mix. It has 23 g protien.  And I bought juice flavored ones from smarteform, each packet has 15 g of protien.
I must have 6 or 7 different kinds of protien powder here if you want to try some before you buy.

I am getting totally paranoid about the protein shakes!  I don't tolerate fluids that i don't like.  It makes me nauseous.  I don't know what I'm gonna do!

The best thing I ever discovered was unflavored or sometimes called "natural" protein.  I make myself a vanilla chai or mocha shake every morning with this, and I only taste the flavors I add, not the protein. I use the Genisoy soy protein natural flavor, but I am sure there are whey proteins that are unflavored as well.

Glad you're doing well.

I use the Unjury chocolate. One scoop of powder, 8 ozs of skim plus, two teaspoons of decaf instant coffee crystals, and 2-3 ice cubes in a blender. Its really not bad; I also cannot force myself to drink anything icky. I really don't mind these, unless it starts to separate. You can get sample packets from Unjury.com, and try them out before making a big investment.

Good luck!

I've tried a zillion, and the ones I like best are the EAS brand.  Walmart sells the pre-made Chocolate fudge flavor,  low carb, 17 gm protein in a 4 pack for around $4.79.  Tastes best cold....
EAS Carb Control is the full name...they have strawberry, vanilla, etc.

EAS also makes a powder I can drink.  Costco sells a huge bag for about $34.99.....  it's got 27 gm of protein in 2 scoops, mixes well with water without a blender  (good for traveling, work, etc), comes in vanilla and chocolate....  and is also a lower carb protein.  (I have to really watch my carbs)    I mix it with only 4 or 5 ounces of water at work, shake it (in a sippy cup with my thumb over the spout)  and drink it.....  no fuss, no mess, quick and done!   It might be good over ice, but I don't bother....  I'm going for the highest amount of protein with the minimal amount of fluids  (grin)   ....  I think the full name is EAS Premium Protein

If your going to the OH event in Philly next month, try asking here to have your OH friends bring you a sample baggie of what they use....   It saved me a bunch of $$$ from not having to buy a lot of ones I wound up hating!      Good Luck finding one you can drink!   Mary C

Oh yeah!  I forgot!  I've been using protein powder this summer to make protein ice cream in my ice cream maker.....  there are some good recipes on eggfaces blog and a few other places....
It's not Bischoff's  (our local homemade ice cream parlor) but it's cold, creamy, sweet and I get to eat it without guilt!!!!!!   (or gas)         If you're struggling to get in enough protein grams, this was an easy way for me to add some extras in!   Mary C

Danielle, PM me your address and I'll send you a sample of the proteins that I have. I think right now at home I have:
Lean Desserts Cinnamon Bun (my favorite)
Lean Desserts Banana Pudding
Lean Desserts Banana Nut Bread
Nectar Iced Tea
EAS Chocolate
EAS Vanilla
Proscore 100 Chocolate

Early on I really liked the EAS protein powders, they are not too thick nor too sweet.

The Lean Desserts might be a little thick for you right now, but you may like them later on.

The Nectar Iced Tea, in the beginning, I needed to mix it with some Crystal Lite Iced Tea, now I just like it on it's own with lots of ice.
