I'm a little scared

Hello !
I have an appointment for this Tuesday to attend the very first seminar with reference to the lap band. My husband came home and told me that he read somewhere on the internet that if I get the lap band, I will not be able to eat "normal" food for the rest of my life. He said that he read that I won't even be able to take a normal pill without crushing it up ! Could this be true???
I was so excited to learn all about this procedure but now, I'm a little nervous to even get involved with it. It's very hard to find anyone who will talk to me about it on the telephone...everyone seems to be in a rush... they just say, "go to our website" or "you will find all of that out at the seminar".
I would be so very greatful, if anyone out there who has experienced this surgery, can send a little information my way?
Thanks so much for taking the time to read my post.
Cindy
Hi,
Attached you will find the Lap Band Forum. You will be able to find lots of answers to your questions there. There are many people who have lots of info and will be more then willing to help.

BTW, I can find things to eat where ever I go and I swallow 2 Tylenol without a problem.
Best wishes!

What wonderful news ! I've heard so many different complications that I was beginning to just accept the fact that I would have to definitely give up something along the way - maybe not !
I hope I have as good results as you. Thanks so much for the words of encouragement !

Yes, I am from Toms River. How nice to talk to someone so close !
Thanks so much for writing to me. I really appreciate it.
First question - can you point me towards a surgeon that performs these surgeries close to where we live? The closest I found was Monmouth Medical Center but the lady who gave me the info was so rude and negative, etc. and then I found a place in Freehold which I am considering. There is also a place in Little Egg Harbor which I found but I can't get in there for quite a while. So, after talking to this really nice lady from Ramsey, I decided to go there. My appointment is for this Tuesday but if you can guide me to someone competent who is closer, that would be great !
Thanks also for the info on the support groups.
I'm not sure if I should stick close to home as far as picking a surgeon. My concern is that if I should have a problem and need immediate care, what would I do if my doctor is up north? Can an emergency room doctor do whatever would need to be done to help me? I don't know if that is really a valid concern. Can anything go so wrong that I would need immediate care?
Oh so many questions.... are you sorry you wrote to me? lol !!
Of course, I don't expect you to have all the answers but any little bit will really help me in my decision making !
Thank you soooooo much for trying to help me.

Welcome to the NJ Boards. You have come to a good place to learn and explore your choices. I would encourage you to come out to the group that Jacki invited you to above. We meet this Monday night at Kimball Medical Center. It's a great group and GREAT place to start your journey with weight loss surgery, if you choose to take it :)
Hopefully we will see you Monday night at 7:00. If not, we also meet the first Friday of each month at Community Medical Center.
I started going to group about 4 months before my gastric bypass surgery, and I am almost 2 years post op now, I think it was one of the best things I ever did for myself... and my children..... I added years onto my life, and happiness into those years too.
Welcome, and I hope to meet you soon.
PS-I have been to Dr. Borao's support group meetings, and I think he sounds like a wonderful doctor, and his staff that runs the meetings is excellent. Maybe you spoke to a nurse that was having a bad day? I would consider him doing any surgery that I needed.... just my two cents.
