How much do you exercise?
I am currently looking into getting the lap band, (I already saw one doctor for a consultation).
I have issues with exercise most of the time.
Do you have to exercise a lot to get the weight off in addition to eating healthier?
HELP!
Doctor is scaring me and telling me since I don't like to exercise I should just go for the gastric bypass.

Hi
Exercise is just as important to those of us with gastric bypass. Personally I can't imagine a doctor saying if you don't like exercise go for the bypass. It doesn't sound right.
Yes, you will lose weight without it because of the limited capacity to eat, however, in the long run you probably will gain alot of it back.
Remember either the band or the bypass are only a tool to help you reach your goal. Learning to eat right and exercise is what will KEEP the weight off.
Good Luck

Every day, I read postings on the main board from members who are perhaps a few years out, and they are gaining weight. When you read their posts, you will see they have fallen back into bad habits - grazing/eating too much, eating too many carbs, not enough protien, and not exercising! I really believe that to be successful longterm, you need to make positive changes in your life, including regular exercise. As the previous poster stated, any WLS is a tool - it is by no means magic. You will need to work to be successful!
Good luck!!

The previous posters are all correct, in order to achieve long term success and not gain weight back, you must make exercise a part of your daily routine. Also, you will have loose skin if you exercise regularly. I have been maintaining a 90 lb weight loss for about 9 months and I attribute this to a 5x a week exercise regimen. I do not think I need any body contouring, my skin issues are minimal. I can eat more and graze and love carbs and I am sure without the exercise I would have gained weight. My suggestion to you and to most of my bariatric friends who do not like exercise is to try Curves. I was a member of curves for 5 years before my RNY and it was a regular part of my life. I continued with it for approx. 6 months post op and then joined a full service gym. Curves is a realistic and short program (in and out in 40 min.) and anyone can find time to do it. If you have BCBS insurance, you can get a membership for $49 joiner fee and $29 a month. I think your doctor recommended RNY over lapband for you is because you will see a much slower weight loss with lapband if you do not exercise. The malabsorbtion of calories with RNY will cause rapid weight loss with or without exercise. Personally, I didn't want to have to deal with saggy skin and that's one of the reasons I exercise all the time! Good luck!
