New to the board

     Tom,

Mary is right about as are all the others others about research, research, research...(CREDIBLE sources). I was lucky to have access to medical journals & research studies the average person does not have.

To clarify, the surgeries I had decided on well before I found a surgeon was lap band or RNY. That was a few years before I even went forward in the process. Heck, I also tried to keep losing it on my own without success.
Finding the right surgeon was a major reason I had not considered proceeding before...

I have had other people ask me- Do you recommend having WLS?? My reply is usally no.
Sounds bizarre right?? After I have had so much success & would do it again in a heartbeat???

I easily share my experiences if someone asks...and don't reccommend one surgery over another..I often share who I know that have had success and what type they had...I share good and bad about my RNY...
but to me it is such a major life altering decision & depending on each person's medical history- a possibly higher surgical risk- I do not want anyone thinking it is easy (cause often it looks it) &
not doing the research before they proceed.

I tell people it is a serious decision, personal decision & I just can't across the board say it is the answer for everyone.
So- your head may hurt from all the information you are gathering.....but in the end will be well worth the investment of time.
Heck, whatever surgery you end up with, you can also help others because you have a better, well-informed background about the other types.
         Keep asking questions...

Yesterday I renewed my driver's license. The lady asked me- has anything on the form changed???  Boy did it feel GREAT to say- my weight.....(over 100 pounds)....

Tom,

On line research is a great way to learn about the different WLS procedures. You'll get all the "clinical" information you'll ever need (or want). And some can be confusing, and scary.

IMHO: the only way to really know what to expect is to speak to those who have had the operation. When I was thinking about what I wanted, I interview about 15 different people. Some were folks who I knew who had the operation - others were complete strangers (friends of friends, or friends of a friend's friends - who were truly complete strangers). This is where I got all the true information concerning the proceedures (before, during and life after). So my suggestion to you is now to start asking different people what they experienced.

If you would like my own personal experience, send me a personal message, and I will bore you with my story. There are others here on the board who have more experience, and I betcha they too would be willing to share. Finally, ask around. I betcha you work with, or know people who have had a WLS or knows someone who did. Funny, I've found WLS recipients love to talk about their history - and how the operation has changed their lives. Only an addict knows the lifestyle of another addict !!

Good luck on your continued Journey !!

Tom

“Nothing I will ever eat will give me the feeling I get as when I lose weight”  The views expressed are based on my own experiences - and should NOT BE FOLLOWED IN LIEU OF DOCTOR’S ADVICE/INSTRUCTIONS. Only your Doctor knows your condition, and make sure you talk to them before making any changes to your diet

it is amaxzing when I start talking about my wls to different people. They tell me who they no that have had it. I was talking to a friend at the fd. He is good friends w/ my neighbor. He tells me my neighbor is having wls. I was surprised to hear that. one never knows who is going to have this surgery. So I am going to keep talking to anybody that wants tro talk about it. and I suspecty that wilol lead to people that have already have it then I can talk to them.
