Need help in NJ
Hi all~~looking for help/support. I had my surgery in June 2004. Up until about 5-6 months ago, all was great. Went through a difficult emotional time (still going thru) and I turned to food for comfort. Still all the "proper" food, but much more.
Subsequently, I a starting to put some weight back on. Which is new to me cuz it hadn't happened until now. I'm scared and ashamed and am looking for help and maybe find a support group. I live in Morris county.
Maybe I need to come back to this site...It's been so long since I've been here.
Any help would be so appreciated.
Thank you...
Marla

Hi Marla
I had my surgery in December 2004, and went through a rough time in late 2006, and wound up leaving NJ and having to move to Maine. I did okay for about a year after getting here (Maine) and then last winter everything sort of went to H e double toothpicks.. so to speak. It was seriously DEEP snow, didnt have a vehicle, they laid off teachers here (I am a sub teacher) so didnt have a job... never left the house and basically I put back on some tonnage.
Originally I lost nearly 300 pounds... day of surgery I was 601 in Iowa .. I have laproscopic RNY on 12/23/04... and I actually made it to 299 before moving to Maine in 2006.
Recently, I have decided to get back to basics... and its going well but I *totally* relate to where you are coming from.
DONT be ashamed Dear..
seriously.
We all have those times, and some of us (Timmy raises his hand) deal with it for different reasons.
Hey... my BMI when I started before surgery was 80... literally. I lost nearly 300 pounds,.. and I have now put back on about 80 or so... and after being **sedintary** (mispelled?) or not getting much exercise I realized...
HEY.. time to get back at it.
First of all...Marla...... your not alone.
Second... remember the basics... the top 4.
If you relax.. take a deep breath and focus on them you WILL lose again..
I promise (I have started losing again so I know where you are coming from.
The basic top 4?
-Hydratiion.... drink as much water as you can... and keep well hydrated.
-Vitamins... get your blood tested and make sure you are following your surgeons instructions... and taking some sort of vitamins DAILY..(remember we need to do this rest of our lives... to stay healthy)
-Protein- If you want to lose weight .. for a little while make SURE that you are getting the minimum amount of protein your surgeon recommends... for Men my surgeon says 80 grams a day... I found I had gotten away from it.. now that I am using protein bars, peanut butter... and supplimenting with a daily protein whey shake I am slowly losing again.... and last but not least...
-Exercise... Gentle, daily or at least 3x a week for at least an hour... Trick? find something.. **anything** that you enjoy.... for me at first it was chair aerobics..... then slowly walking... then getting into a pool....
Now I found a health rehab center here in the small tiny Maine town.. it has a new remodel they have a pool... recumbant bicycle... and a treadmill.. been doing it about two weeks now and its helping : ))) but thats for ME...
Exercise? My advice for everyone is find something that you can tolerate... or enjoy.. and DO it.. regularly... raise your heart rate gently 3x or more a week for an hour... daily if you can handle it.
Water(hydration), vitamins, Protein, exercise.
Thats what my surgeon (way back in a galaxy far far away.. (Iowa) .. told me was the Top 4.
And it works.
Marla... i guess if you are being kind to YOU... and trying to relax.. focusing on those 4 things... and taking one day at a time... then last .. maybe the 5th thing?
-Support.
Attend some support groups near you.. share... one of the BEST things (its why I am back here... where everyone knows my name... ok ok.. its not Cheers.. but hey.. grin...)
One of the VERY best things is talking to others with the surgery experience,.. or giving encouragement to those seeking to get the surgery.
Truth?
You will be JUST fine... I panicked for about six weeks... I was SOOOOO ashamed.... I mean one of the most radical guys I know that I admire a lot is a guy named AJ (here on the NJ board) and all I could think was...
**man if Michael.. or AJ.. or Jack Martin saw me NOW... they would be sooooo disappointed... ** then I realized...
Nope.
Its all in my HEAD.. man. My pals would be supportive... right after affectionately slapping me up side the head for not having more FAITH :P
They WOULD say... ***Timmy Ray.. get busy BOY : )
But hey.. life is short.
Sorry for my LONG answer (they used to hold my hands in grade school I couldnt talk ... its an expressive thang)....
You will do just fine..
just DONT be harsh with yourself...focus not on the weight GAIN but on how much
your life is different SINCE surgery and that you will reclaim it... slowly.
focus on the basics..
take one day at a time...
and get next to some positive encouraging people like at a support group.
And take solace....
from a guy that is CURRENTLY dealing with 80 pounds that I previously didnt carry....
It will come.
Takes time.. but remember.. ""You lost it once.. you know HOW now... it will happen again.
Promise. Just be nice to YOU... dont get down.... and know your not alone.
Hey.. I rejoice to be alive. I dont have Type II diabetes since my surgery.... I have met some of the most AWESOME people from having the surgery .. at the Toms River and Lakewood Support groups.... I am rebuilding my life... I have great blood pressure... and am basically healthy (just a bit fat again which I am working on)
And Im not in a materialistic or money focused place in my life.. for me thats KEY.
Be encouraged.
Sorry for talking your ear off...
but you will do JUST fine.
If I .. (or any of the folks here on the NJ board) can encourage you.... holler?
Trust me...
the SINGLE best thing you can do is be kind to yourself....
dont beat up on your struggles but embrace each day...
and know ....
we are pulling for you. : ))
And hey your not alone?
Let me know how you are coming...
you will be in my prayers... and God bless : )
Take care.. and Godspeed in your efforts
Timmy Ray
PS I went through a hard emotional time then was without work, snowed in (literally) and felt I was worthless... it was a ROUGH winter..... all I can say is.... be encouraged, and you sound like you are on the path back... and let folks know if there is anything we can do to encourage you in a more specific manner?
God Bless : )
