New to Forum - Strom or Schmidt??
Hi all, I'm new to this board and am agonizing over which doc to choose. I haven't read much on here about Dr. Strom...but he's much more convenient for me...Dr. Schmidt sounds excellent but is so far for me to keep appointments...Anyone have any opinions on Dr. Strom??? Any experiences they can share? I do not want to go w/Dr. Abkin or Bertha (they are close by to me)..my husband had surgery with them a few years back and had a bad experience with them...so I'm between Strom or Schmidt?? Any insight?? Please help! Thanks.
I had a lapRNY in April at Hackenesack with Dr Teviditi who is in the same group as Dr Schmidt. They have a great practice and perform hundreds of surgeries a year which is important when shoosing a surgeon. I can see you are a hike from their office but you do not go very often. I went once pre-op and then have gone only twice since then. Any questions I have I leave for the nut and she calls you back.
The hospital was great. I had it done on 4/24 and was home on the 26th. I have done great and have lost 70 pounds!!
Good luck with your search.

Hi and welcome to the board. I do not know the docs you mention but I can highly recommend mine. Dr. Ajay Goyal, has an office in Union, NJ and practices at Overlook where he is head of bariatrics. Very gifted surgeon and pleasant fellow. His office staff is wonderful. As an RN, I did lots of research into the procedure itself and then chose my surgeon based on other recommendations and my appraisal of him from a medical standpoint. That he is a nice man is just an extra. Even the nurses and other staffers at Overlook like him. I know he has a seminar coming up at Overlook on 8/12. You can meet him and the staff there. I sound like an advertisement but I just feel so strongly about the entire office and the doc. Good Luck!
Hi Beanie and welcome! I haven't been on in a few days so I am sorry I missed your post.
I don't have any insight on Dr. Strom -- but I am having surgery on Monday with Dr. Schmidt. My experiences with their office thus far have been 5*****! I really like Dr. Schmidt and the fact that they have such an excellent post op program is also a huge plus. I did a bunch of research and for my own reasons Dr. Schmidt was my choice. I live slightly over an hour away from hackensack -- but I personally feel it is worth it for the right doctor, and in my opinion, one of the best hospitals! Good luck with your journey!!!!

I would NOT use NOR RECCOMEND Dr Strom or any doctor in his practice. This is just my personal opinion on Dr Karl Strom's practice...I cannot make any claims on any of the doctors.
Here is my reason:
I was turned away from attending the Montclair monthly support group because I did not have my RNY surgery at his practice. I recently moved to northern NJ (in the last year) & was unaware of his practice, so I had my surgery from a surgeon I was well informed about in Manhattan. I was completly satisfied with my outcome & would not have changed a thing.
Now when it comes to the support goups - I live less then 5 minutes from the Montclair practice. A week out I was home recovering & found his support group by googling Essex County WLS. I called the practice to confirm the meetings date & time and was told that their doors were closed to anyone who did not have their surgery by Dr Strom (or his partners). I pleaded & was told sorry, but they do NOT accept outsiders.
I was hurt & offended - all I was asking was to attend their SUPPORT GROUP. I had a ton of questions & all I could do was phone call my NUT since I could not handle the 35 min express bus ride into manhattan.
Because of his practice snubbing me, I now drive 35 minutes out of my way to attend either the Hackensack Support Group or the Morristown Support group, which both have open door policies.
