My name is Nicole, and I am trying to learn and considering getting the Lap-band....I am very concerned because my mother had a gastric bypass and has suffered from a lot of complications which have been life altering (for the worse)....and I am wondering what are the complications from the lap-band.....I am having a hard time finding anything that has affected Patients in a bad way? Please keep me infromed!!!! I don't want to regret have a surgery and suffer like my mother! thank you!

Hello Nicole,  I was band in November and I have not had any problems.   In the beginning you will have to learn to eat (chew, chew, chew) slow and once you  learn the do's and don'ts, you will be fine.    I am  looseing weigh very slow but  I am happy with that because do not have a lot of skin hanging all over.     Just remember the one thing about the band,  if there are any problems it can be removed.

You might want to cross post this to the Revision board....  and see if the folks there have experiences they'll share.  As with every type of weight loss surgery, there are some negative outcomes...  you might get m ore info there...Good luck with your research!  Mary C

Hi Nicole, I was banded Aug 2007 I have lost 55lbs. and I feel great.  I have had no complications besides learning how to eat.  At first I had trouble tolerating rice, pasta, and bread. Now I can eat these in moderation of course. I have dropped from a size 18/20 to a 12. I feel great the only concern I have is my hair is breaking a little but I have been taking care of it more so it's getting better. If I had to do it again I would.  I love the compliments and feeling no aches and pains in my body like before.  I havent heard about too many problems with the lap band. But is is reversible. Just remember to chew and eat slow. Good luck!

Lap Band on 05/03/06 with
hi nic nac I live in Old Bridge too.  I had lap bad surgery over two years ago.  Unfortunately, without a support group or "buddy" I have failed but I am going to try again.  Would you like to buddy up (I am probably more your mom's age, but had lap band, not bypass). June

I had the band put in about 7 months ago, and have lost 65 lbs or so.  I was worried about RNY fatality rates, and so went with the band.  The major problems with bands are bands slipping or eroding into the stomach.  Also you can find some people with port problems - it flips or becomes infected.  Slippage is treated by unfilling the band and hoping it goes back in place.  If not, or if it erodes, you have to remove the band.  Some get replacements, some don't.  Definitely look on the lap band and revision boards. Best of luck to you as you make this choice. Eileen
