Truthfully this issue is huge! The patients *****ly on the procedure alone almost always lose weight at the start because the procedures are powerful but if they don't learn to monitor and modify their behavior they regain it! I always always always talk to my patients about this issue during my psych exam....didn't your psychologist? Sometimes no matter how many times it is said, patients don't want to hear it. Dr Mike

I dont think I am taking the easy way out. My post is about how family and friends who do not understand the procedure say that weight loss surgery is the easy way out.  Yes she did. But I knew about weight gain after weight loss surgery even before I decided to do it.

I had a 20 year old niece yell that at the 22 year old who had WLS   "You took the easy way out".  I watched this kid struggle with her weight for the first 21 years of her life....  have a miserable high school and college experiences, and finally, with surgery, was able to get the weight off and keep it off.    I wanted to beat the 20 year old with a bat!!!!    Nothing the older one or I did was easy...  It's still not easy, just possible!  That which was never possible before....  I have had 47 years of weight struggles...   Surgery has made it possible for me, this time, to lose more than I ever did before, and hopefully, to keep it off forever.   Laugh at the idiots who don't realize this....  don't bother trying to convince them,  living your longer and healthier life will be the best answer!     Good Luck,  Mary C

A fried of mine says "Don't argue with idiots, first they drag you down to their level and then they beat you with their experience!" You all deserve a lot of credit for making the choice to have WLS, with it you have a real chance of getting to where you want to be. You have the right to be proud of your decision! Dr MIke

Oh yeah.  I've been told many times I took the easy way out.  And, as for the psychiatrist...mine was a joke!  Took me 45 minutes to drive there, waited about 8 minutes in the waiting room filling out paperwork, a whopping 5 minutes in his office and I was done.  He basically asked if I knew what I was getting myself into. LOL  Uh, duh!  I guess he took one look and said "yup, this one needs the surgery alright!".  It was a joke. I've heard "Cyn, you took the easy way out" many many times in the last 14 months.  But, then people actually "see" how I eat and how I do things.  Yup, they apologize later.  I go to TONS of business lunches and, yes, order off the kiddie menu.  I'm not shy about having the surgery.  So, if someone asks why or says "I'm paying.  Order what you want!" I tell them.  And, each time they've asked to see my "before" picture which I gladly show.   So, now, 14 months later I just bru**** off or offer them to spend a day with me, start to finish.  No one's taken me up on it yet. LOL  Though, my husband still "hints" that it's been easy.  Sure, I've made it look easy!  I've had no complications whatsoever and it's truly been easy for me.  But, I don't let people know that. Good luck!  It's a journey definitely worth taking!

Hi everyone!  These are the posts that are extremely helpful to me.  I am having RNY on August 11th.  I am very very excited, but a little nervous at the same time.  Not really nervous about the surgery itself, but more nervous about life post op!  But from what I understand, that is perfectly normal.  I may be one of the ones, who even though I've done tons of research, still knows that it is going to be hard - but I'm sure I will find it harder than I think it is going to be.  Sounds normal to me, so I hope I'm not fooling myself. I have been surrounded by pessimistic people with my surgery.  Most say, "are you sure you know what you're doing?"; or "are you sure you need to be this drastic?".  So I haven't yet experienced anyone saying that I am taking the easy way out....  I would be really angry if I ever heard it though, so I'm sorry people are saying that to you!!!  We all know here, that this is NOT EASY -- if it were there would be no overweight ppl in this world!  Good luck with your surgery and show all those people what you've got!!!!   Danielle
