Easy way out...

As I said in my post before..I have not told any of my friends. Another reason I have not said anything is because I have over-heard a few people saying that WLS is the easy way out. I guess I can understand why people would say that especially if they don't know anything about the surgery.  I remember sitting at my Nutritional evaluation as the doctor is explaining to me what I have to do post-op and thinking to myself...anyone who thinks this is going to be easy should check their facts..get some info.  Has anyone ever been told or has anyone ever heard anyone else say that WLS is the easy way out?

Sadly it is a common reaction.  Even sadder is the fact that many patients hope it will be an easy way out for them.

Hi..thank you for your reply.  I can see why patients would think it was an easy way out especially if they themselves are not informed. It is definitely something that I will have to work on for the rest of my life. I have to change every habit and behavior. I think that is why it gets me mad when people say "Oh..she took the easy way out.". It really isn't....

It might be a sad reality.. but what I find more sad it that the Medical community has not recognized this and they treat patients at face value.. patients have been allowed to live in there false hope and medical community maybe because they make money off these people don't bother to straighten them out..  sad but true to my thoughts...  Maybe it's that the medical community doesn't know how to help these people... but I know for one myself... I knew what to say the dr and so do others to make them believe I knew this wouldn't be a quick fix.. but in the back on mind.. where the dr's don't go and maybe patients don't allow them to go.. that thought was and is always there.. and any patient who tells you otherwise is lying...  this is one of those deep dark secrets we keep to ourselfs.. just like the bag of oreo's in the cabinet behind the protein powder....  Sorry the truth hurts!!!

I think the fear of gaining weight back is always in the back of anyone mind who has had weight loss. It is my mind and I havent even had surgery yet. It is in my husbands mind and he had RNY 5 years ago.

No bag of Oreo's here...

I really do not think it is the fault of the medical community if you deliberately mislead the doctor. Doctors are not mind readers.  The reason behind the psych visit is to determine if there are underlying issues which can hinder your weight loss.  Again, if you lie during the exam you are the one doing yourself harm not the doctors.   I knew surgery was not a quick fix and did not expect it to be.  I researched thoroughly and knew exactly what I was getting into.  I hoped the weight would come off quick enough in the beginning so that I would be encouraged to keep working at it.  I knew it would not be easy and it is not.  I have not had anyone say to me that it is the easy way out and if they did I really would not care.  I would calmly tell them why it is not easy and perhaps they would understand better.  I did not do this for anyone but myself and my family.  I have had more people admire me for taking this step than criticize me for it.  With the exception of my immediately family, what others think about my decision is of no concern to me. That is why I am not shy about sharing the fact that I had surgery with anyone.

HI, Yes, I have had people say that I was taking the easy way out,  but I know what I had to do for me.  I was tired of dieting only to gain the weight back over, and over. and over again, I was Tired!!!  I needed something that was going to help me, and after researching WLS I decided that this is what I needed.  My father actually commended me,  he said because it takes a lot of courage to have a surgery that I chose to do.  We are all courageous!!!!! I believe my chances of ever YOYOing again are very slim, I have a tool now that can help me.  If I didn't have this surgery I would probably be 350LBS now, sad to say.  I am only 157lbs, and now I have a chance to live a normal healthy life.

First of all..congratulations on being 3 pounds away from your target weight! That is great!  I totally agree with you! I had lost 40 pounds before my wedding through starvation basically only to gain back 70+. And it is true..I could totally see myself being 300 pounds because I am almost there now. This is a chance for all of us to live a healthier life not YOYOing, which is so bad for you anyway. I can not wait until the 15th....so I can finally take charge of my life! Obesity isn't going to win this time!!!!
