Gastric Bypass Revision...and Struggling (Post-Op)

Hi everyone! This is my first time on this site.... but I am having a very hard time and I figured I would reach out. I had my original roux-en-y gastric bypass in August of 2004... I lost 130 lbs and ended up gaining 40 back. I had an experimental "less invasive" revision surgery in 2007 called EROS (endoluminal revision of obesity surgery) but unfortunately it did nothing. I'm now 6 days post-op from my Gastric bypass revision (the real deal).... and having such a hard time! I've found this time around is infinitely worse than the first surgery. Has anyone had this experience? I'm having nightmares about eating, I miss food terribly, I'm miserable, in significantly more pain, and I haven't lost a pound (by the way, I've been obsessed with the scale.) My level of resilience is much lower than it was 4 years ago. I guess I'm just hoping hear if anyone else has had these issues... even people who have had their first bypass and can relate. Any help would be so greatly appreciated. Perhaps some normalization would help..... no one else seems to "get it."  Warmest regards, Jackie :)

Hi Jacki! Thank you so much for your reply. You're right- obsessing won't do any good... I guess I'm just very surprised that I'm not breezing through this like my first surgery. How soon after your procedure did you start noticing weight loss? Also I noticed that your surgeon is Earl Noyan; he was partnered with my current surgeon in 04 and was the one who did my original procedure. He's great- I hope you're doing well! Again thank you... The reality check helps. :)

i had my open  bypass in oct 2003, lost  187 lbs,   in 2007 had a triple hernia and a tummy tuck and  that  was  way more painful than the  bypass ..and after the hernia -i became obsessed with food!  i gained back 40 lbs!  i  feel  your pain!  i am now thinking about that revision and i  hate myself  that i went through all of that surgery and then let myself gain the weight!  my doc  said not to torrure myself  too much..  do the proper testing. ..upper gi series , nutritituon and  psych again to see why  i m eating so much again.. and  more  food at one  sitting..  just take it day by day and things wil get better and  talk to people..  family friends your md.. let them help you thru this..

hey there. i totally understand. i feel like i never should've gotten to this point where i had to have this revision. i used to feel (and look) great. so you're starting your testing? i was eating a lot...... and i mean a lot. more than i ever ate before i had the original surgery. those are all good points though.... i'm on full liquids now so i'm having an easier time- sort of. i did get some sugar free ice cream which i think may be a bad idea so i probably won't do that again. now im just crazy over the scale. weighing myself so frequently is doing no  good. but i want to see the weight come off! and fast. :)

The first few months after an RNY are very hard because food you could normally tolerate, you cannot tolerate even in tiny quantities- so you feel super deprived...and feel lie you will never eat normal food again. Heck as a temporary fix, if I needed crunchy- I would chew on bread and spit it out...I was just missing textures I could not tolerate... I didn't do it often at all, but it helped me feel like I had flavors in my life.  hahaha My surgery was last 6/21 and I can eat pretty much anything now- in moderation of course. I watch the scale because I want to catch myself early if I start to backslide. Hang in there- it does get better and your food choices will expand to include many things... Good luck! Bernadette

Hi Bernadette! Thanks for the encouragement. It sounds like youre doing great. Congrats! After my original surgery, I remember chewing on food and spitting it out as well. Gross, but it did the trick.  Im not so much worried about my food choices as I am watching that number on the scale go down.I hope I'm not overdoing it on the liquids. Its amazing what a little fear can do! :) Regards, Jackie

hey, i don't mind at all. i'll let you know how things go. im probably just being paranoid but i feel like i can tolerate more liquid than i should be. does that go straight down or do liquids sit in the stomach pouch for a bit? i totally know where you're coming from!
