Hi Kathy, Did you use the BMI Calculator on this website?  Here is your results: You have a BMI of 37.1. This indicates that you are Obese. Your BMI is generally high enough to qualify you for bariatric surgery if you have comorbid conditions such as diabetes (type II), hypertension, sleep apnea or other potentially life-threatening diseases.

The table below shows value ranges and what they mean.

RangeMeaning
less than 18.5 Underweight
18.5 - 24.9 Normal
25.0 - 29.9 Overweight
30.0 - 39.9 Obese
40.0 - 50 Extremely Obese
over 50 Super Obese
So from what I see you would probably qualify, but you would probably have too see your PCP to make that decision.  Hope this was helpful.  Good-Luck!!!

Thank you for the reply.  You know it is just as painful to be 230 and probably just as dangerous.

Hi Kathy, I went with one of my friends,  to one of Dr. Andrei's Seminars.   Dr.  Andrei accepts my friends Insurance so that is why she went to see him.  I went with her for support.   He was so nice, and so was his staff.  Anyway,  I believe you will definitely qualify for the LapBand if not any other invasive surgery.  I don't know much about having the LapBand just what I read here on the boards.  The only reason why I say that you would probably qualify for the LapBand, because most of the people who have had the LapBand don't have to lose as much weight , and their BMI is about what yours is.  But lets not jump the Gun, wait till you see the doctor, and find out what he has to say.   Even if you do qualify for the LapBand you will finally have some type of tool that can help you lose the weight.  Well Good-Luck, and let me know what the Doctor had to say.

Hi Kathy, I'm 5'6 and weigh 236. The only reason I qualified for wls was because I have hypertension, mild sleep apnea, asthma, and my cholesterol level is a tad high. I go for my lap band surgery next Wednesday. It took a year from the time I went to the surgeon's seminar to my surgery day. I can't wait!!! Nereida
